While it’s not a given that Bill Belichick will still be the Atlanta Falcons’ head
coach in 2024, it’s looking more and more likely that he will be doing so in Mercedes-Benz Stadium if he is
Right now, that’s not a given. To the best of our knowledge, Belichick has conducted two interviews with the NFC
South organization. He’s not the only one who thinks so. The Falcons are actively seeking a new quarterback to take
Arthur Smith’s place. In fact, according to one report, Belichick has “lost momentum” with the Falcons.
But let’s just say that Arthur Blank, the owner of the Falcons, goes big-game hunting and hires Belichick to oversee
the football team in Atlanta. Finding a quarterback is Belichick’s first task as the flock’s leader.
Smith was fired by the Falcons due to their quarterback situation. With the exception of the most crucial position on the field, every position on the roster is
talented, particularly on offense. Desmond Ridder, a projected third-round pick in 2022, doesn’t seem to be it, and
Logan Woodside and Taylor Heinicke don’t exactly give off a lot of confidence either
Given Belichick’s age—the head coach turns 72 in April—you have to figure that
if the Falcons choose to go the Belichick route, they’ll probably choose a veteran
quarterback over a project, even in a draft that could be rich in quarterbacks. Belichick’s hiring is a move to win, sort of.
Thus, a trade or free agency is probably the best course of action. Kirk Cousins,
the seasoned quarterback, is generally regarded as the best available free agent.
He seems to be what Belichick is looking for. He handles the football with care and accuracy. An NFL executive told
Jeremy Fowler on ESPN that Cousins would be a “great fit” for the Falcons under head coach Bill Belichick
It sounds like the Bucs and Mayfield are both interested in a reunion, but that’s
easier said than done. And why the Falcons for Mayfield, and why Belichick for Atlanta?
You might remember a very fascinating tale from Mayfield’s draft year if you go back a few years. Mayfield’s agent, Jack Mills, claims that the Belichick-led
Patriots contemplated trading up to select Mayfield in the 2018 draft. To get that high on the board, the Patriots
would have needed to move heaven and earth, and Mayfield went to Cleveland with the first overall pick. However,
Albert Breer claims that the Patriots attempted to arrange a meeting with Mayfield’s team. In 2018, Jeff Howe of
The Athletic received the same information. In a 2019 profile of Mayfield, ESPN’s Mina Kimes also
mentioned that the quarterback believed the Patriots would genuinely advance to acquire him.
Howe also included this intriguing tidbit of information: “Josh McDaniels, the
offensive coordinator for the Patriots, informed a member of Mayfield’s camp
that the team was actually thinking about that kind of scenario (trading up to draft him).”
