Challenging:The manager of the Phillies is sounding the drums of war to battle with Braves …

The manager of the Phillies has a strong message for the Braves about championship

The National League East has been won by the Atlanta Braves six times in the past, most recently by a margin of fourteen games.

However, it looks like that will alter in 2024.

The manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, Rob Thomson, outlined his team’s strategy to start strong and prevent

Atlanta from taking a commanding lead in the division in an interview with Alex Coffey of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The offense is where it all starts. After signing a free agent contract last offseason, Trea Turner was a free agent

acquisition who got off to an extremely cold start, while Bryce Harper took some time to get back to his previous level of

play after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Thomson claims that the Phillies’ preparation for spring training

was impacted by the fact that a number of them took part in the World Baseball Classic.

They are permitted to cross to the complex during major league games and

participate in those (player development) games. only to obtain bats. They are not even required to play on the field; if they

so choose, they can have an at-bat each inning. They can also get at-bats there now that we have this Trajekt [pitching] machine.

While mentioning Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, and J.T. Realmuto in his remarks, Thomson stressed that in order

to avoid falling behind early in the divisional race, everyone should get more spring training at-bats.

“If you start off in a slightly better position… We were.500 during the months of March and April, so we

weren’t too bad. However, in May? We were far from excellent. After that, you have to play catch-up. And a lot of energy

is being expended there. On the other hand, August and September are less anxious if you have a better start.”

Thomson also mentioned the Phillies’ ability to modify their preparation for the relievers; however, in contrast to the

hitters, it is crucial that they do not receive any extra practice in minor league settings.

Thomson explained, “It’s making sure that all of our relievers, for the most

part, check certain boxes.” During spring training, they all play back-to-back games. Everyone completes one plus

[inning]. When they enter the game with runners on base, they all have a dirty inning. Because there is a lot less

adrenaline in major league spring training games than in minor league ones, you try to do that there

Thomson addressed the conclusion of spring training and the team’s intention to view the final week of Grapefruit

League play as an extension of the regular season as he wrapped up his spring training adjustments.

and then putting on the loudest setting for the final five or seven games, or

whatever, and declaring, “Let’s go.” To help relievers get used to it, we’re sort of

mixing and matching, putting them in positions they’ll likely play in during the regular season.”

The Phillies, who finished in third place in the division recently (2022) or second place in 2023), advanced far into the

playoffs as a wild card and defeated Atlanta in the divisional round of each season.

However, Thompson appears to hold the opposite opinion of Seattle Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto in that his team won’t accept a wild card spot.

“I don’t want people to believe—and I know that players wouldn’t believe this—that winning the wild card makes things easier and is acceptable, and that

winning the wild card will advance you. You won’t make the playoffs if you’re thinking that, in which case you should aim for the wild card since the division

winners from the previous two years have been eliminated early. It’s likely that you won’t advance to the

postseason. Our goal is to triumph in the division. And we need to play well every month of the year in order to accomplish that.

When the Phillies finished 102–60 in 2011, they last won the NL East. However, they were defeated by the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLDS.
