Crazy dog rips The way Dan Campbell managed the game in the Lions’ defeat

The Detroit Lions lost the NFC Championship Game to the San Francisco 49ers despite blowing a 17-

point lead in the second half, raising concerns about Dan Campbell’s ability to manage the game. People are

talking about his decision to go for it on two fourth downs in the second half rather than try to convert a field goal.

Chris “Mad Dog” Russo joined in on Monday, criticizing Campbell’s judgment.

I find Russo’s criticism of analytics to be the only part that is completely inappropriate. This was more a result

of Campbell’s faith in his group than it was of analytics. The same conviction that served them well throughout the season.

It didn’t work in the most important game of the year, and some would contend that a different coaching style

is required for the playoffs, particularly when playing on the road. But when Dan Campbell entered the

game, we knew who he was. The same guy is he now? He stuck to his principles, but it was ineffective.

Though it’s easy to criticize Campbell right now, the Lions will most likely win if Josh Reynolds doesn’t miss a pass on a four-and-2 from San

Francisco’s 28 late in the third quarter. For him, Campbell is unable to make that catch.
