With tears in his eyes:An emotional farewell from Alex Pritchard to Sunderland as the midfielder explains his actions

After concluding his move to Birmingham City, midfielder Alex
Pritchard tweeted an emotional farewell on social media, stating that he had to
leave Sunderland in pursuit of “stability and security”.
Pritchard, who was previously under Tony Mowbray’s leadership, has
committed to a two-and-a-half-year contract at St Andrew’s.
The Sunderland midfielder’s contract was set to expire at the end of the current campaign, and the Black Cats
were only prepared to extend it by a single year. In an attempt to force a
trade, Pritchard decided not to play in Saturday’s match against Stoke City as a
result. Pritchard claims that in order to get the greater stability that comes with a
longer-term contract, he had to look for opportunities elsewhere.
Pritchard departs the team with “unforgettable” memories despite a
relationship breaking down in the last few days of his stay, and he has
expressed gratitude to the supporters for their “unwavering support and passion”.
Pritchard posted the following on social media on Thursday afternoon: “Dear teammates, staff, and Sunderland fans.
“I would like to use this occasion to thank the incredible supporters, the
hardworking employees, and everyone connected to the team. Your unfailing
dedication and support have meant the world to me, and I am really appreciative
of the priceless experiences we have shared.
“I am incredibly proud of my role in our advancement and my thrilling
Championship competition experiences. I will treasure these experiences for the
remainder of my career and they will always have a special place in my heart.
“Stability and security are crucial for me at this stage of my career, therefore I had
to look into other options to further my professional goals.
“I want to thank all of you from the bottom of
my heart for your amazing support and the great trip we have
experienced. I’ll always remember my time at Sunderland with pride and
affection. I hope the future holds nothing but the best for you.”
“First and foremost, we thank Alex for the contribution he has made to
Sunderland AFC,” stated Kristjaan Speakman, Sunderland’s sporting
director, following Pritchard’s confirmed departure, which saw Birmingham
paying an undisclosed amount. He was a key player in our League One promotion
and has been a standout component of our Championship team. I have no doubt
that our fans will have happy memories of him.
“We are happy to have reached a suitable conclusion for the club and Alex, who
leaves with our best wishes. Transfer windows are challenging periods for all involved.”
