The new coaching staff of the Tennessee Titans is starting to take shape. The Titans have reportedly focused on
former Baltimore Ravens defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson as their new defensive coordinator, according to
ESPN, after appointing former Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan as their new head coach.
The appointment of the defensive coordinator was crucial because Callahan is a first-time head coach with
an offensive mindset. Many speculated that a seasoned defensive play caller might be on his way to Nashville as a
result, but in the end, the Titans sign a young player. Tennessee interviewed very few candidates for the position of
defensive coordinator, which may indicate that Callahan had a short list, with Wilson at the top
In 2008, the forty-one-year-old Maryland native, who attended the University of
Maryland for his college football career, began working as a scout for the Chicago Bears. After a while, he transitioned to
coaching and joined the St. Louis Rams as their defensive quality control coach before taking on the role of defensive backs coach. Prior to joining Baltimore in
the offseason, Wilson was the DBs coach for the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Jets.
In 2023, the Ravens’ defense was the best in the league. Baltimore made NFL
history by being the first team to ever lead or share the league in takeaways,
sacks, and scoring defense. They ranked sixth in both passing defense (191.9 passing yards per game) and total defense (301.4 yards of total offense per
game). Baltimore’s passing defense was the seventh worst in 2022 before Wilson joined the team.
For the Titans, Wilson’s experience with defensive backs is noteworthy because their cornerbacks have been inconsistent
for a long time. Since 2018, Tennessee’s pass defense has failed to rank in the top half of the league.

Wilson’s Eagles advanced to Super Bowl LVII in 2022 with the best passing
defense in the National Football League. The Eagles’ passing defense was the second worst in the league this season.
Big names in the secondary, like Darius Slay and James Bradberry with the Eagles and Jamal Adams and Marcus
Maye with the Jets, were helped along by Wilson. Wilson wasn’t just being pursued by the Titans for a significant promotion.
Wilson was reportedly targeted by the Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, and Rams, but Callahan and Tennessee were ultimately able to sign him.
Wilson is a former player for the Titans that has experience playing in the
secondary and has proven to be successful with a number of teams. This
cycle, Tennessee’s new defensive coordinator has become a household name thanks to his scouting background.
