Championship rivals ‘in talks’ over permanent transfer for £1.3m-rated Sunderland-linked attacker

The latest Sunderland-related transfer news with Preston North End reportedly already in talks with Liam Millar.

According to sources, Preston North End and Basel, a Swiss team, are “in talks” over Liam Millar’s permanent transfer.

After progressing through the ranks at Liverpool, Millar enjoyed loan stints at Charlton Athletic and Kilmarnock before signing a long-term contract to join Basel in 2021. After that, Millar signed a summer loan with North End, playing 24 games while contributing five assists and three goals.

Due to the winger’s impressive play, Sunderland reportedly showed interest in him. According to Sun columnist Alan Nixon, the Black Cats wanted to sign the attacker as a long-term successor for Jack Clarke.

Additionally, Nixon said, “Unless a big offer comes for Clarke, Southampton are more likely to leave it until the end of the season.” In spite of two proposals from Serie A club Lazio, Sunderland is apparently holding out for a sum of about £18 million for Clarke. Brentford is said to have shown interest in the former Leeds United player.

However, new information from our sister publication, the Lancashire

Evening Post, indicates that Preston North, a loan team, is leading the race to

sign Millar, with talks with Basel apparently under way.

According to their report, Millar has a deal with Basel until 2025, but it’s

anticipated that he’ll leave the Swiss club this summer. The wide player, who

joined Fulham’s academy at the age of 13 before moving to Liverpool in 2016,

expressed a desire to return to England this season. Millar signed a contract to go

to Basel in 2021 for an estimated £1.3 million after five years at the Reds. It is

thought that he made a good living for himself back in the northwest.”

Additionally, they claim that Preston North End was unable to work out a financing agreement that included a buy-option or buy-obligation. Thus, any stronger opposition could jeopardize their summertime aspirations to hire Millar.

The LEP also assert that “The player has the power because the Canadian can just wait until the summer to see what

happens.” He seems to have had a great time wearing a North End shirt and has

blended right in with the team. The fact that Millar is not signed to a Premier

League team is undoubtedly the only distinction between him and former loan

players Tom Cannon and Cameron Archer.”
