So sad :Boris Becker has Split with Holger Rune as the Dane loses another coach in a week

Boris Becker has Split with Holger Rune as the Dane loses another coach in a week

The six-time Grand Slam champion explained that “professional and private

responsibilities” prevented him from being available to work with Rune long enough for their collaboration to be successful.

This comes just one week after Rune parted ways with Swiss coach Severin

Luthi, who had only begun working with him in December ahead of the 2024 seaso

Luthi, who coached Roger Federer from 2007 until his retirement in 2022, was with Rune at the 2024 Australian Open

last month, where the Dane was knocked out by French wildcard Arthur Cazaux in the second round

Becker did not accompany the world’s number seven to the Australian Open,

instead serving as an analyst for Eurosport in Germany.

Rune hired Becker as his coach in October, and the former world number one’s arrival helped him recover from a

run of ten losses in eleven matches stretching from Wimbledon in July to Stockholm in October.

The 20-year-old advanced to the semi-finals of the Swiss Indoors in Basel and

the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters, ensuring his qualification for the ATP Finals in Turin, which had appeared uncertain.

Rune was eliminated in the group stage of the year-end championships after

losing two of his three matches, but he put up a good fight in three-set losses to Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner.

In a Twitter / X post, Becker revealed that he had ended his brief stint as Rune’s coach due to an inability to devote enough time to the 20-year-old.

“I would like to inform you that I will step down as the head coach of Holger

Rune with immediate effect,” the German coach wrote in a letter.

We began this partnership with the goal of reaching the ATP Finals at the end of last year, but as time passed, I realized

that in order for this to be successful, I would need to be much more available to Holger than I am.

“I am unable to provide Holger with the assistance he requires at this time due to professional and personal obligations. I

wish him the best and will always be his number one fan. I truly appreciated our journey together.”

Becker coached world number one Djokovic from 2014 to 2016, during

which time the great Serbian won six Grand Slam titles and 14 ATP Masters 1000 tournaments.

In an interview with Danish publication Ekstra Bladet last week, Aneke Rune revealed that Luthi would no longer be working with her son.

“I just want to inform you that from now on Holger will only have Boris and Kenneth in his coaching staff,” she went on to say.

Don’t want to make a big deal out of it, but the timing with Severin was clearly off. It would take too few weeks for Severin to be able to provide the continuity that Holger requires.”

Rune’s mother had stated that Danish coach and former ATP player Kenneth

Carlsen would now play a more prominent role in the coaching team, alongside Becker

However, with Becker’s departure, Carlsen is now Rune’s sole coach, and

what appeared to be a formidable coaching lineup has quickly disbanded
