Ryan Day’s recent appointment of Bill O’Brien as Ohio State’s offensive

coordinator may be temporary, with O’Brien emerging as a leading candidate

for the head coaching position at Boston College, according to FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman.

The vacancy at Boston College arose late in the coaching carousel, after former

head coach Jeff Hafley left to become defensive coordinator for the NFL’s Green Bay Packers.

According to sources, Boston College is looking for candidates with prior head coaching experience, including O’Brien,

Texas analyst and former Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst, and current Army head coach Jeff Monken. In

addition, the Boston Herald reported on Monday that O’Brien’s negotiations with the ACC institution are well underway.

O’Brien has a successful track record in college football, most notably in

rebuilding Penn State following the Jerry Sandusky scandal, and in the NFL, where he led the Houston Texans to four AFC

South titles and two playoff victories over six full seasons before being fired in 2020 after a winless start.

O’Brien, a native of Boston, rose to prominence as an assistant coach in New England, where he helped the Patriots

reach the Super Bowl as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2011 before leaving for Penn State.

He also had a fruitful tenure in the same capacity under Nick Saban at Alabama in

2021 and 2022, playing a critical role in quarterback Bryce Young’s Heisman

Trophy victory and subsequent selection as the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft

After a difficult 2023 season as the New England Patriots’ offensive coordinator, O’Brien’s return to college football

surprised many when he was named Ohio State’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach on January 19.

The move was a significant shift for Day in what appears to be a pivotal offseason

for the Buckeyes. Day, a former offensive coordinator, had been in charge of Ohio

State’s offense and play-calling since replacing Urban Meyer as head coach in 2019.
