Lions GM Brad Holmes has hit back at critics and send a strong warning to NFL

Brad Holmes, general manager of the Detroit Lions, responded to critics during his end-of-year press conference. He

defended his decisions and draft picks after the Lions lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game.

“When you look back at those [draft picks – and those picks were not welcomed by many in this room – every

single move was intentional and was made with intention,” Holmes told reporters at the time.

Back in 2021, we didn’t have multiple ones, twos, or four picks in the first 100.

We did have that, and we used it wisely; however, you did not agree. But we used our picks wisely.”

When asked if he enjoyed proving his critics wrong following Detroit’s

successful season, Holmes responded that it wasn’t about gloating, but about accountability.

I’ll say this: I place a high value on accountability,” he added.

“I believe you would expect me to be accountable when I’m up here, especially when things don’t go as planned. And I believe I am a very accountable person.

“I think when you heard so much negativity about our draft, I said, ‘Look,

wait until they start playing football, you’ll be grateful.'” When they started

playing football and people began to give credit, everyone forgot about the negativity. I give credit to probably two

people in this room who said, ‘I was wrong, I was wrong,’ which I appreciated and respected.”

Holmes went on to express his dislike for experts who hide their true thoughts rather than being open about their

criticisms of the Lions and their actions. “And so just having accountability, that’s all it is,” he said. “As I previously stated, I

am not up here to give my ‘I told you so’s.’ I would say that the ‘I told you so’s’ occurred when we chose the players. You

can sleep like a baby as long as Dan [Campbell] and I are confident in our decision to select these players.

Despite the outpouring of criticism about the Lions’ draft picks and off-season

moves, Campbell and the team remained unfazed. During the 2023 NFL season, Detroit accomplished a rare feat by

winning 12 games for only the second time in their history and capturing the NFC North title for the first time since 1993.

The Lions advanced to the NFC Championship Game, but were defeated

34-31 by the San Francisco 49ers, giving them their second playoff victory in the Super Bowl era.

Holmes continued his message, saying, “Every move that Dan and I make is

intended to sustain what we are building. Every single move, and I mean every single move we make and don’t

make, is intended to sustain what we’ve been building. It is real. Look, it’s all about normalizing what we’re
