Reasons why Titans Hired Brian Callahan as the New Head Coach

Tennessee Titans Head Coach Brian Callahan and his wife, Allyson, daughter Norah, 8, and Ronan, 6, take their turn in front of the cameras after Callahan’s introductory press conference at Ascension Saint Thomas Sports Park in Nashville, Tenn., Thursday, Jan. 25, 2024.

Following a couple of poor seasons, the Tennessee Titans hired Brian Callahan, the former Cincinnati Bengals offensive

coordinator, as their new head coach. Callahan will succeed former head coach Mike Vrabel, who has been with the

Titans since 2018. Vrabel’s six-year tenure with the Titans culminated in several

playoff appearances and an AFC Championship Game. However, he hasn’t

won a playoff game since 2019 and has missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons. The Titans fired Vrabel due to

his lack of recent success and have decided to take a completely different direction. Whereas Vrabel is a more

defensive-minded coach, the Titans hired Callahan to improve their offense’s production.

The Titans’ offense has been terrible since 2022, so hiring a former offensive coordinator seems like a great solution.

Prior to joining the Bengals, Callahan worked as a quarterbacks coach for several teams. This prior experience assisted him in developing talented

quarterback Joe Burrow, whom the Bengals drafted in 2020. Burrow has achieved tremendous success in the NFL,

thanks in large part to Callahan’s coaching. To compete with the other teams in the AFC South, the Titans

must improve their two young quarterbacks. The other three teams in

the division have NFL-caliber quarterbacks. While Titans quarterback Will Levis had some highlights during his

rookie season, there are still some questions about his play in 2024. The remaining young Titans

Malik Willis is the current quarterback, but he is unlikely to start. Willis showed

promise in college, but his skill set has not yet translated to the next level. Although Willis still has time to

demonstrate his abilities, the new coaching staff will evaluate whether he has improved sufficiently from previous seasons.

Similar to Vrabel, Callahan has had some playoff success. Ironically, Callahanhelped the Bengals defeat the Titans in the 2021-2022 postseason. That same year, the Bengals advanced to the Super

Bowl, where they lost to the Los Angeles Rams in a close game. The following year, the Bengals advanced to the AFC

Championship game, but were defeated by Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Callahan has demonstrated that he can contribute to postseason success and lead the Titans to similar results. Overall,

Callahan went 5-2 as the Bengals’ offensive coordinator in the postseason. It is worth noting that this will be

Callahan’s first head coaching position at any level. The Titans have made a risky coaching hire.

His confidence stemmed from his success with the Bengals.

Callahan comes from the Bengals, so he has experience coaching an offense with

a terrible offensive line. Callahan was able to lead that offensive line to the

Super Bowl, but only with Burrow at the helm. Because the Titans have some talented skill-position players, Callahan

should be able to develop Levis or Willis into competent NFL quarterbacks. The Titans still have wide receiver De’Andre Hopkins to help them in the passing

game, and they may retain star running back Derrick Henry from free agency this offseason. The Titans roster has many flaws, but a few upgrades could

help the team become more competitive in 2024. So, Callahan’s goal for the 2024 NFL season should be eight or nine victories.
