Almost done deal:Brian Callahan is set retain three Titans assistant coaches

Brian Callahan to retain three Titans assistant coaches

Brian Callahan, the Tennessee Titans’ head coach, may retain three of Mike

Vrabel’s assistant coaches. They are running backs coach/run game coordinator Justin Outten, cornerbacks

coach/defensive pass game coordinator Chris Harris, and defensive quality control coach Lori Locust, according to

Paul Kuharsky’s tweet. Kuharksy isn’t saying these coaches are staying, but Callahan should keep all three on staff.

Callahan has dismissed several Vrabel employees. He has already hired several

coaches, including Dennard Wilson and Nick Holz as defensive and offensive

coordinators, and his father, Bill Callahan, as offensive line coach. The fact that Harris/Outten/Locust remain in

limbo bodes well for their chances of staying in Nashville.

Outten previously worked under Matt LaFleur at the Green Bay Packers. He has

a diverse resume, with the majority of his coaching experience in the West

Coast Offense, which Brian and Bill Callahan are most familiar with. That

makes Outten an ideal candidate for Callahan’s offensive coaching staff.

Harris is the most interesting person mentioned here. According to Kuharsky, Callahan has hired former Titans player

and assistant coach Steve Jackson to join his defensive backfield staff as defensive

backs coach. Harris interviewed for several defensive coordinator positions

across the league, including one with the New York Giants, which went to former

Titans DC Shane Bowen. Harris could collaborate with Jackson as the

cornerbacks’ and/or defensive passing game coordinator. Retaining Harris and

hiring Jackson would be a significant victory for Callahan.

Locust is a talented defensive coach who recently won the Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Last season, she

worked primarily with outside linebackers coach Ryan Crow, who was

relieved of his duties by Callahan. Locust could stay in her current position or be

appointed as Crow’s replacement. According to Kuharsky’s tweet, Frank

Bush has taken over as inside linebackers coach, leaving Callahan with a vacancy at outside linebackers coach.
