Some NFL team owners are dissatisfied with how much the San Francisco 49ers
have benefited from hiring diverse executives and candidates, according to ESPN’s Seth Wickersham .
While it is normal to hear about grievances against top teams during
Super Bowl week, this one is a little unusual. The nugget is hidden in an in-
depth profile of San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan, which was published on Wednesday.
It makes sense that the detail was included to honor the successful head coach ahead of an exciting rematch with
the reigning Super Bowl champions on football’s biggest stage. But, despite being sandwiched between a wealth of
information about how Shanahan has prepared his team to face the Kansas City Chiefs, the tidbit is difficult to miss.
The reality is that San Francisco succeeds with a diverse workforce, but not in ways that other teams cannot replicate.
The team is taking full advantage of the league’s incentives, which were
established to address a long-standing systemic issue that has historically
prevented people of color from advancing to NFL leadership positions.
The league implemented the Rooney Rule in 2003, requiring teams to
interview at least one person of color for head coaching positions. The rule, which
aimed to increase the number of minorities in head coaching positions,
has since undergone changes. The NFL praised last year’s six minority head
coaches, but they still accounted for less than 25% of the 32 positions.
In November 2020, team owners approved a proposal to reward
franchises for developing diverse talent.When a minority executive or coach is
promoted to another team, the team receives a third-round compensatory
pick for the next two seasons. If a team loses both a coach and a personnel
member, it will receive a third-round pick for three years.
San Francisco received seven compensatory picks in the 2023 NFL
Draft, the maximum number allowed. Three of them were third-round picks
awarded through the league’s minority hiring incentive.
Brock Purdy , the 49ers’ current starting quarterback, was selected last in the 2022 draft as a compensatory pick. The
same goes for linebacker Dre Greenlaw and All-Pro safety Talanoa Hufanga
A quick scan of the 49ers’ coaching roster reveals a wealth of diversity, which is
nothing new for the team. Since 2020, San Francisco has seen numerous diverse employees succeed beyond the
organization. The list includes Robert Saleh, the son of Lebanese immigrants
who was hired as the New York Jets’ head coach in 2021. He is the first Muslim coach in NFL history.
Martin Mayhew, a Black man, was hired from San Francisco as the Washington
Commanders’ general manager. Mike McDaniel left the 49ers to become the
Miami Dolphins’ head coach. Ran Carthon left to become the Tennessee
Titans’ general manager. DeMeco Ryans eventually became the Houston Texans’ head coach.
All of these hires resulted in compensatory picks for the 49ers. More
importantly, they reduced the league’s diversity deficit. The issue became prominent during Brian Flores’ racial
discrimination lawsuit in 2022, and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is questioned about it every February.
This year, he repeated what he frequently says: “We still have a lot of work to do.”
