Shameful:Premier League in ‘Awkward’ position as Everton and Nottingham Forest cases are discussed

Premier League in ‘Awkward’ position as Everton and Nottingham Forest cases are discussed

Kieran Maguire believes the Premier League is in a “awkward” position with

its updated Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Widespread reports earlier this week suggested that league officials are planning to overhaul the current PSR

system in the wake of Everton and Nottingham Forest being charged with breaking the rules

The Premier League has yet to make an official statement, but football finance

expert Maguire believes they should quickly release information about this week’s meeting of all 20 clubs.

Part of the issue with Premier League shareholder meetings is that there are 20

chairmen or chief executives present,” he said on the Price of Football podcast [7 February, 16m 35s].

“You and I both know some of them, and they enjoy gossiping. I believe the

Premier League is in an awkward position.

“It would make sense to release the minutes of the meeting as soon as

possible, otherwise we get it going through two or three WhatsApp groups and then a newspaper as a story.”

The entire PSR debate was undoubtedly the hottest topic of discussion at this

week’s meeting in London, following a relatively quiet January transfer window.

Clubs were clearly hesitant to spend after witnessing what happened to

Everton in November when they received a 10-point deduction, with another possible.

Currently, clubs are limited to £105 million in losses over a rolling three-year

cycle. However, that is reportedly being looked into in time for the summer transfer window.

The Premier League had always said it would look into the current PSR

regulations, but it’s no coincidence that they’re doing so now.

As Maguire describes, they have found themselves in a “awkward” situation. It does not help when various aspects of

the meeting are leaked to the press, rather than only coming out through official channels.

If the system is changed so that other clubs can spend more freely, Everton

fans will become even angrier. The Premier League sought to make an example of the club, but for what?
