Arthur Blank reveals who he really wanted to hire as Falcons Head Coach

At one point, Bill Belichick was thought to be the front-runner to take over as

head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, and if team owner Arthur Blank had the last say, that could have occurred.

Before Raheem Morris was appointed head coach of the Falcons, Belichick had

several meetings with Blank. Even last month, there was a report that claimed Blank “desperately” wanted to work with

Belichick. That begs the question of why Atlanta chose not to hire the man who is regarded as the greatest coach of all time.

In a Monday audio episode of “The Athletic Football Show,” Dianna Russini claimed that although Blank courted

Belichick, the owner finally paid attention to CEO Rich McKay and a few other Falcons team members.

“I don’t believe Arthur Blank was acting out of ego at any point. Russini stated, “I believe he paid attention to those around

him, including Rich McKay, who sincerely desired Raheem Morris to be the head coach. “McKay’s backing was

there from the beginning. They gave Arthur Blank permission to hang around with Bill Belichick. Belichick boarded his

boat. They spoke, then he took Belichick to his house in Atlanta in his private plane.

“I firmly believe that Arthur Blank would have hired Bill Belichick if he had not

been swayed and had not been paying attention to people in his building.”

However, the opinions of those he respects and believes in informed him that Raheem Morris is the one.

During the most recent hiring cycle, the Falcons and a few other teams probably

had the same fear. For many years, Belichick was the New England Patriots’ de facto general manager. If he signs

with another organization, he’ll likely demand control over the roster. According to reports, several in Atlanta

were worried about how the team’s power structure might change if Belichick was hired.

Blank has the option to veto everyone and let Belichick take over and tidy

things up. Instead, he listened to his football staff, something that not every owner would do.
