“I was of a petite stature,” expresses the £3 million Premier League midfielder, attributing his departure from Leeds to the club’s decision based on his physical size.

Leeds United’s academy has produced some excellent midfielders in recent years.

Archie Gray is currently performing well for the Whites, while James Milner, Fabian Delph, and Kalvin Phillips have

all gone on to win Premier League titles, and Lewis Cook is a standout at Bournemouth. However, there is one

Premier League midfielder who came through Leeds’ academy that many people may be unaware of.

Indeed, Fulham’s Tom Cairney began his career as a youngster at Leeds, and during an appearance on the Footballer’s

Football Podcast, the Fulham captain discussed his time in West Yorkshire and his eventual departure from the club.

Cairney claims that he enjoyed his time at Leeds’ academy, particularly the

coaching, but that he was released by the club at the age of 16 due to his size

Cairney was released by Leeds because he was too small The £3m man spoke

about his time at Leeds and his release. “Academy days I started off at Leeds

United. A well-known academy, a very good academy. Looking back I’d say I started the academy a bit too early. It felt

too serious too young. It felt like a job from a young age. An amazing academy, amazing coaches, but I was released at

16 because of the physical side of the game, I was very small, very slight,” Cairney said.

It must be acknowledged that Leeds made a serious mistake here.

Cairney went on to become one of the best midfield players in the

Championship for many years, and he’s now doing it in the Premier League.

In the end, his size was not an issue. His technical ability allows him to rely less

on his strength, and at 6 feet 1 inch, he’s not one of the smallest players around.

Leeds have done an excellent job with their academy products in the past, but it’s fair to say they fell short on this occasion.
