NFL Free Agency: Will Falcons Re-Sign Calais Campbell?

A year ago, the Atlanta Falcons surprised many by acquiring veteran defensive end Calais Campbell through free agency. Campbell, 37, chose the Falcons over a number of more well-established opponents because he was impressed with Atlanta’s development. However, Campbell’s one-year deal just raises the question, “Will he return?”

“In his 16th season in the NFL, Campbell tied for the team lead in sacks with 6 1/2, his highest total since the 2019 season,” according to The Athletic. “That enabled him to surpass his career total of 100 sacks. His current number is 105 1/2. Following his one-year free-agency agreement, Campbell started every one of the 17 games and helped the Falcons’ defensive fortunes turn around significantly. He played well towards the end of the season and expressed his desire to stay in the league for at least another year, provided the necessary conditions are met. After the season, Ryan Nielsen, the defensive coordinator,

moved to Jacksonville, which decreased his prospects of coming back to

Atlanta for another season is a possibility.

“I told Terry [Fontenot] to let him know when I know,” Campbell remarked in a recent conversation, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “He was obviously excited to have me back if I wanted to play football again, but he was also going to honor my decision-making process and allow me to finish the way I wanted to.” On March 13, NFL free agency kicks off.
