The Eagles made a move on Wednesday by signing veteran edge rusher Julian Okwara. Okwara, aged 26, was drafted by

the Lions in the third round from Notre Dame during the 2020 NFL Draft, bringing four seasons of experience to the table.

 

In his career spanning 38 games, with four starts, Okwara has accumulated 9

sacks, 16 QB hits, 12 TFLs, and 54 tackles. His standout season occurred in 2021, where he recorded 5 sacks and an interception.

 

During the previous season, Okwara appeared in nine games, starting one for the Lions. However, he was waived by

the team in January to activate James Houston from IR. Subsequently, the Lions signed Okwara to their practice squad

once he cleared waivers. As Okwara was not signed to a futures deal after the season, he became a free agent and was available in February.

 

Julian Okwara is the younger sibling of Lions edge rusher Romeo Okwara, who boasts 25 sacks in his eight-year NFL career.

 

During the 2020 Draft, Julian Okwara garnered significant attention. NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein awarded Okwara a second-round grade, noting his

impressive athleticism and potential for development, particularly in refining his pass-rushing techniques and consistency in run defense.

In the NFL, Okwara has been a steady presence on defense and occasionally contributes on special teams, although he hasn’t experienced a significant breakthrough in his career.

 

The Eagles face several decisions regarding their edge rusher position this offseason. Haason Reddick has been

given permission to explore a trade despite expressing his desire to stay in Philadelphia. Reddick is seeking a new

contract, and it remains to be seen if the Eagles will meet his demands. Additionally, Josh Sweat is entering the final year of his contract, prompting the

team to make a decision regarding his future. Veteran Brandon Graham, set to become a free agent, has expressed interest in returning for his 15th and

final NFL season. Furthermore, the Eagles are looking for increased production from first-round pick Nolan Smith in his second NFL season in 2024.

 

The Eagles have undergone significant changes in their coaching staff, including the hiring of new coordinators and several position coaches. While only the new coordinators have been officially announced, other coaching positions are likely to see turnover as well.

It appears that passing game coordinator and assistant head coach Kevin Patullo is likely to remain with the team, given his

close relationship with head coach Nick Sirianni, possibly under a different title. Jeff Stoutland’s position seems secure due to his established reputation.

However, beyond these individuals, there could be a complete overhaul of the coaching staff. This level of turnover is remarkable, especially for a successful

playoff team like the Eagles, and it’s rare to see such significant changes without a coaching change at the top.
