Robert Saleh reveals what he learn from 49ers super bowl loss to Kansas city chiefs

As if Robert Saleh’s job as coach of the New York Jets isn’t already difficult enough. Kyle Shanahan, his former boss with the San Francisco 49ers, has

dragged Saleh’s name into the fray after firing defensive coordinator Steve Wilks following their 25-22 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.

Shanahan was asked on Wednesday if he wants to hire another energetic

defensive coordinator, similar to Saleh and Demeco Ryans, who previously held the position in San Francisco.

“Watch Saleh now; he’s not very energetic,” Shanahan said.

Of course, when he was defensive coordinator for the 49ers, Saleh was known for his outbursts of emotion. He exuded energy and fire. So, was

Shanahan criticizing his former assistant? Perhaps implying that Saleh has been defeated in three seasons as Jets coach?

That could certainly be the case. Saleh was recently put on notice by Jets owner Woody Johnson, who stated that there needs to be a significant improvement next season.

“We’ve got all this talent, and we’ve got to deploy it properly,” Johnson said last week. “I believe they all received the

message. This is it. Now is the time to go. We have to produce this year. “We need to produce this year.”

The Jets have gone 7-10 the last two seasons and are 18-33 since Saleh took over as coach before the 2021 season.

At times, the loss seemed to get the best of him. Some of that zeal has been dampened, whether by Zach Wilson’s inept quarterbacking or how the Jets’ dreadful offense has sabotaged some elite defensive plays.

Losing Aaron Rodgers to a ruptured Achilles tendon four games into the 2023 season did not lift Robert Saleh’s spirits either.

Kyle Shanahan, whose team lost the Super Bowl in heartbreaking overtime on Sunday, also complimented Saleh on Wednesday. In discussing how difficult it has been for the Niners to replace such talented defensive coordinators in recent seasons, he stated to ESPN, “It was really tough losing DeMeco.” It was hard to lose Saleh the year before.”

However, there was no further explanation for his quote, which questioned Saleh’s diminished energy these days
