“Leeds would be having our pants down” – Middlesbrough urged to snub future transfer agreement

FLW’s Middlesbrough fan pundit has urged the club to look elsewhere instead

of paying the £1.5 million fee for Leeds United’s Sam Greenwood.

HIGHLIGHTS

  •  Middlesbrough have a £1.5 million option to buy Sam Greenwood from Leeds United.
  •  Greenwood’s recent contribution has been limited, prompting doubts about his long-term value.
  •  Despite his age and potential upside, Middlesbrough may be hesitant to pay the fee for Greenwood.

As to The Athletic, Middlesbrough’s loan agreement for Sam Greenwood includes a buyout option of £1.5 million with Leeds United.

Since joining Boro in the summer, Greenwood has scored five goals and provided three assists in 26 games, including a pivotal free kick against Leicester City early in the season.

The summer departure of Chuba Akpom, who had been the subject of much speculation due to his 28 goals, was undoubtedly a blow to Boro. His lack of interest in signing a new contract meant that an eight-figure transfer to Dutch powerhouse Ajax was approved.

The team led by Michael Carrick has had to find a way to fill that hole, but Finn Azaz was the only attacking addition made in January after Morgan Rogers was sold to Aston Villa. Morgan Rogers moved through the ranks swiftly.

Consequently, the manager of Middlesbrough will be hoping that Greenwood and Azaz can be two players

who help lessen the damage of losing important forwards in successive windows.

They are currently trying to catch up to teams like West Brom, Coventry City, and

Sunderland in the play-off chase, but Greenwood’s impact has decreased as the team has struggled to get points.

The Championship team will have till the end of the season to determine if to keep

the 22-year-old on staff going forward. The adaptable forward can play as a

winger, offensive midfielder, or center midfielder. However, he was a striker for

Arsenal in his early career, and Boro has also used him briefly there.

Despite this, he has only contributed one important goal to the score in the last ten

games and none of the last five games across all competitions.

Middlesbrough’s £1.5 million Sam Greenwood agreement

Dana Malt, a Middlesbrough supporter for FLW, has expressed dissatisfaction with the 22-year-old’s recent contributions. Despite encouraging initial indicators for his career, she would not sign Greenwood in the summer for the reported £1.5 million.

“I wouldn’t sign Sam Greenwood,” the woman stated. I believe his influence on our games is really little.

It is true that he was playing well and scoring goals a few months ago; however, at the moment, he is neither playing well nor scoring goals.

To be honest, I think he’s a really limited football player.

“I know that £1.5 million is quite a cheap amount in today’s market but I think

Leeds would be having our pants down if we were to pay that much for him.”

Middlesbrough’s Sam Greenwood issue

£1.5 million in today’s market has a lot of potential upsides, given Greenwood’s age and the resale value that he could hold.

Since he is still a pre-peak player, Middlesbrough may be able to benefit from a low risk/high reward scenario.

It is difficult to dispute with Malt’s harsh evaluation of Greenwood, though, as he is primarily a set-piece and open-play ball striker with little offensive capabilities.

Should he manage to negotiate a permanent switch to the Riverside, he would need to go through a rather steep development curve and run of form in the next five months.
