Breaking News :To avoid another disastrous season, Vikings must do this

To avoid another disastrous season, Vikings must do thisĀ

The Vikings may or may not have a final plan that is ready to implement at this

point in the offseason. If they have that plan, they will not make any public announcements.

However, discussions about how this team will proceed continue on a daily basis. Will they re-sign Kirk Cousins, or will they move forward without him? If

general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O’Connell determine that Cousins will not lead the team to the Super Bowl, they must prepare the team for the next iteration.

Cousins has put up impressive numbers for the Vikings over his six seasons in Minnesota. His previous numbers with the Washington Redskins (now the Commanders) were also impressive.

Despite his accuracy from the pocket and popularity in the Minnesota locker room, Cousins has struggled in big games or against elite opponents.

He is 36 years old, and there is little reason to believe that aspect will change at this stage in his career.

This is not meant to diminish Cousins, as his resume shows that he has completed

66.9 percent of his passes in his career, averaging 3,947 passing yards per season with 27 touchdown passes and 11

interceptions. Overall, he has a passing grade of 98.2 percent. During his six-year tenure with the Vikings, he averaged 101.2

The point is that the team will find it difficult to give up on Cousins. There is enough evidence to give us hope that things will improve by 2024. Cousins had

never suffered a major injury prior to last season, and if there’s one quarterback who can be counted on for 16 or 17 starts per season, it’s Cousins.

Regardless of whether the Minnesota leadership opts to retain Cousins or explore other options, it’s imperative for the Vikings to secure a competent backup quarterback. The absence of a reliable backup proved costly for them in 2023.

Their trio of backup quarterbacks, Josh Dobbs, Nick Mullens, and Jaren Hall, failed to effectively support the team. Although Dobbs showed promise with wins against the Falcons and Saints, his

performance waned when the team needed consistency during several winnable games.

The prevailing belief is that Jacoby Brissett is the solution for the backup quarterback role. With eight seasons of NFL experience, Brissett has played for several teams including the Patriots,

Colts, Dolphins, Browns, and Commanders. He boasts three seasons with 11 or more starts and five seasons with multiple starts.

Brissett’s standout season occurred in 2018 with the Colts, where he completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 2,942 yards, tallying 18 touchdowns and 6 interceptions.

His ability to perform under various coaching staffs and offensive schemes makes him an ideal fit for the Vikings’ needs at the position.

If they sign Brissett, they will be able to draft a rookie to fill the quarterback position long-term. Brissett’s presence means they won’t have to rush a rookie

into the lineup, and because the Vikings have the 11th overall pick, they shouldn’t be expected to hand the position over to a first-year player.

If the Vikings use that pick on a quarterback, they will not have the opportunity to draft Caleb Williams of USC, Jayden Daniels of LSU, or Drake Maye of North Carolina.

That is perfectly fine. Williams is listed at 6-1 and 215 pounds, but once the true measurements are revealed at the Combine or shortly thereafter, it would not be surprising if Williams barely breaks 6-0.

Williams has been labeled a “can’t miss,” but he can miss by a long shot. Consider Carolina’s Bryce Young, who was the No.

1 pick a year ago. He was an unsuitable fit, whereas No. 2 pick C.J. Stroud is already one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
