Buckeyes Coach Ryan Day Expands Ohio State’s Coaching Staff

Following an eventful offseason, the Ohio State Buckeyes’ coaching staff has been finalized. Coach Ryan Day announced Thursday that James Lauinaitis, a

graduate assistant, has been promoted to linebacker coach. That followed the appointment of former UCLA Bruins head coach as offensive coordinator,

succeeding Bill O’Brien, who left Columbus to become head coach at Boston College.

Day expressed satisfaction with the completed staff, stating, “It’s our responsibility each year to assess which

areas need adjustment, whether within the team or the staff. We’ve put in a lot of effort and time to ensure the right

individuals are in the right roles. Now, it’s time to get to work,” Day remarked Friday at the Ohio High School Football Coaches’ Association clinic.

Day and Kelly share a history, with Day having played under Kelly’s guidance at New Hampshire when Kelly served as the offensive coordinator. Additionally, Day worked alongside Kelly as his

quarterback coach during their time together with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers. “Chip and I have a longstanding connection, so we

share a similar vision. It’s been invigorating to have him join us,” Day commented. “He brings a lot of enthusiasm as he familiarizes himself

with the team, making for a promising start. It’s fantastic,” Day added. “All I can say is I’m thrilled to have Chip on our side.”

As for Laurinaitis, despite having only one season of experience as a graduate assistant, Day observed enough potential during that initial year to warrant his promotion.

Day highlighted Laurinaitis’s strong connection and passion for Ohio State, emphasizing his credibility with both current players and recruits due to his extensive experience and success, including in the NFL. “James has made a remarkable transition from player to coach,” Day remarked. “He and Brian were players who truly maximized their potential on the field, and they bring valuable insights from their NFL careers, particularly in the latter years, to guide players on the field.”

Day commended Laurinaitis’s effectiveness in recruiting, noting his recent success in that aspect. “He has shown tremendous promise, and there is significant momentum building, which led us to believe that this was the right decision.”

Day and his restructured staff are set to commence the 2024 season on Aug. 31 against the Akron Zippers.
