Breaking News:Why Falcons will be getting less from Jaguars in Calvin Ridley trade.

Why Falcons will be getting less from Jaguars in Calvin Ridley trade.

The Falcons traded Calvin Ridley to the Jaguars last offseason, and the

agreement included various conditions regarding the compensation Atlanta would receive in return. Presently, the

Falcons possess the Jaguars’ 2024 third-round pick based on Ridley meeting specific playing time and production thresholds in 2023. However, if

Jacksonville opts to extend Ridley’s contract, this selection will elevate to a second-rounder. Nonetheless, indications suggest that Atlanta is likely to retain the third-round pick.

“As per the terms of the 2022 trade with Atlanta for Ridley, Jacksonville’s third-

round pick converts into a second-rounder if the Jaguars extend Ridley’s contract. This is why Jacksonville would

need to delay any potential extension until after the commencement of the new league year, thus avoiding the risk of surrendering a second-round pick. At

that juncture, any agreement would be categorized as a free agency signing rather than an extension. However, this grants Ridley the opportunity to engage

with other teams during the negotiation period, unless he and Jacksonville can come to a preliminary understanding and exercise patience,” remarked Jeremy Fowler.

The primary incentive for the Jaguars to extend Ridley lies in eliminating the prospect of a bidding war and potentially losing him to free agency. Ridley could

opt to re-sign with Jacksonville as a free agent once the league year commences on March 13 at 4 p.m., incurring significant costs for the Falcons.

Although Ridley’s return to football did not meet expectations for some, it would

be unfair to attribute most of the Jaguars’ struggles to the Falcons’ 2018 first-round pick. Despite challenges, Ridley still managed to amass impressive statistics,

recording 76 receptions for over 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns, including four 100-yard games.

According to information from Charlie Campbell of Walter Football, the Jaguars were dissatisfied with Calvin Ridley’s performance last year, citing concerns about his attention to detail. Campbell

reported, “The Jaguars were disappointed and frustrated with the play of Calvin Ridley last year. Ridley was underweight, did not provide significant yards after the catch, and had numerous missed assignments. These

sources indicated that the Jaguars are seeking a sizable outside receiver for Trevor Lawrence, and the position is a priority in the early rounds, either on Day 1 or Day 2.”

While it appears that Trent Baalke, the Jaguars GM, may prefer to retain the All-Pro pass catcher, he also seems inclined

to wait until the new league year begins before finalizing any deal, potentially saving a second-round pick. Allowing Ridley to explore free agency entails some risk, but if it proves successful,

Baalke could be hailed as a shrewd decision-maker, leaving the Falcons with only a fourth and third-round pick from the Calvin Ridley trade.
