Ronnie O’Sullivan is very sad and is on strike

Last week, O’Sullivan expressed regret to fans for his decision not to participate in the Welsh Open, which commenced in Llandudno on Monday.

Instead of competing in the tournament, O’Sullivan chose to take on a punditry role for Eurosport, coinciding with Gary Wilson’s achievement of the 199th 147 break in snooker history.

Following the event, as reported by The Sun, O’Sullivan was questioned about his record of achieving 147s in the sport. In response, he remarked, “I reckon another five or six, but I went on strike a long time ago.”

The 48-year-old, who has amassed 15 maximum breaks throughout his illustrious career, then suggested that snooker authorities should consider increasing the prize money.

He responded straightforwardly when asked if he would attempt 147s again for a £147,000 reward, stating, “Yeah.”

Throughout his illustrious career, O’Sullivan has amassed a remarkable £13.9 million in prize money. In the 2023-24 season alone, he earned £876,000 in tournament winnings.

Last year, at the World Snooker Championship, the prize money for a maximum break was £40,000.

In 2016, O’Sullivan declined to complete a 147 at the Welsh Open upon learning that the prize money would be ‘only’ £10,000.

Leading Barry Pinches 3-1 and with a score of just 40 in the fifth frame, O’Sullivan queried the referee about the prize for a 147.

Upon learning the amount, he continued the red-black sequence until deciding to pot the pink after the penultimate red.

O’Sullivan then cleared the rest of the table for a break of 146 as he

“I thought it was a bit too cheap. Making a maxi is such a massive achievement and I think it’s worth a bit more.”

‘But the ref played a guilt trip on me, saying, ‘Come on, do it for your fans’. And I said to myself, “OK, because I haven’t got long to play anyway, so I might as well go out on a high” .’
