Leeds Strikes Gold with “Electric” Star as Attacking Numbers Skyrocket by 433%

Leeds United appointed Daniel Farke as their new manager last summer, and the German tactician has done an excellent job thus far.

The Whites are currently second in the Championship, having played one more game than Southampton in third, as they fight for automatic promotion back to the Premier League.

He has given opportunities to young players such as Mateo Joseph and Archie Gray, as well as assisted some of the gems he inherited in playing their best football.

Some supporters may have questioned Daniel James’ future at Elland Road after Fulham signed him on loan for the 2022/23 season.

The Wales international returned to Yorkshire last summer after a disappointing season in London, and has thrived under Farke’s leadership.

Last season, the former Manchester United winger struggled to establish himself as a regular starter in Marco Silva’s Premier League squad.

He made 24 appearances, starting only seven of their 38 matches throughout the year, struggling to consistently deliver as a goal scorer or creator.

James managed to score two goals, out of 1.98 expected goals (xG), and provided one assist, out of 0.77 expected assists (xA), in those 24 outings, resulting in an average of one goal or assist every eight games.

The Welsh player didn’t regularly create opportunities for his teammates, making just 0.4 key passes per game, translating to less than one chance created every two matches.

These statistics explain why Fulham decided against pursuing a permanent deal to retain him for the 2023/24 season. Leeds’ decision to retain James last summer has proven to be beneficial, possibly unexpectedly, as he has flourished under Farke, who has capitalized on the winger’s speed.

The 26-year-old’s attacking output has significantly improved this season compared to last, aided by the manager’s effective system and the team’s relegation to the Championship.

As of the current date (19/02/2024), the Welsh international has tallied ten goals and six assists in 29 league matches for Leeds this season, averaging one goal contribution every 1.81 games.

His attacking output has surged from three combined goals and assists last season to 16 thus far in the current campaign, marking an astonishing increase of 433%.

James, lauded as “electric” by reporter Sanny Rudravajhalam, still has 13 more matches, potentially including up to three playoff fixtures, to augment his tally of goals and assists for Leeds United.

Under Farke’s progressive system, which emphasizes ball dominance, the dynamic forward has thrived. He has been presented with 7.5 expected goals (xG) worth of opportunities—4.52 more than the previous season—and averages 37.5 touches per game, an increase of 22.7 compared to his time at Fulham.

Leeds United have maintained an average possession of 57.5% in the Championship, providing their attackers ample chances to impact the final third, a situation James has capitalized on.

Thus, Farke’s astute management has paid dividends with the winger, as the rapid talent has excelled this season, erasing the struggles of his tenure with Fulham to emerge as a pivotal player for Leeds United.
