New Contract Details For Jets’ Dynamic Pass Rusher?

During the 2022 offseason, New York opted to let Huff progress into the final year of his rookie contract. Subsequently, the Memphis standout racked up an impressive 10 sacks in the 2023 season, ranking among the elite in various key pass-rushing metrics. Despite his strong performance, determining the terms of a contract extension or a new deal in free agency for a player of Huff’s age and standing presents challenges. Rich

Cimini of ESPN previously mentioned that Huff is seeking an annual salary of $20 million, a figure that would position him among the top 10 earners at his position.

However, at just 25 years old, there’s a strong possibility that Huff might be setting his asking price too high, potentially making it challenging for him to secure a favorable deal to either remain with the Jets or secure a lucrative long-term contract elsewhere. According to Spotrac, Huff’s next contract is estimated to be around $10 million, with a potential four-year deal totaling $44

million. While Huff may be overestimating his market value, there’s still room for the Jets to offer a slightly higher salary to retain a homegrown talent. A more probable scenario for the Jets to negotiate a long-term extension with Huff could mirror the deal that sent Haason Reddick to Philadelphia in 2022. Reddick’s three-year, $45 million contract, awarded to a player with consecutive seasons of 10 or more sacks, represented excellent value for a pure edge rusher.

Although Huff is younger than Reddick was when he secured his deal with the Eagles, Reddick demonstrated greater productivity as a pass rusher. Both players exhibit strength against the run but have primarily distinguished themselves as dynamic pass rushers. Philadelphia’s contract with Reddick could serve as a potential middle ground for both the Jets and Huff, offering a basis for negotiation that satisfies both parties.

Another aspect to consider is that Huff might not find a team in the NFL willing to offer the lucrative contract he desires. If Huff were to hit free agency and encounter a less-than-robust market, it could potentially decrease his asking price enough for the Jets to feasibly negotiate a long-term extension.

For New York, retaining a player who has been part of their organizational strategy for some time is highly advantageous. However, striking the right deal to keep Huff will pose the greatest challenge.
