The Detroit Lions released a veteran safety. Tracy Walker IIIĀ

The Detroit Lions announced the release of veteran safety Tracy Walker III via social media on Tuesday night.

Earlier in the day, Walker posted what appeared to be a farewell message to Detroit on Instagram. Expressing gratitude, he thanked the Ford family for their support over the past six seasons with the franchise.

“I want to thank my fans and supporters for always having my back through it all,” he wrote. “I want to thank the city for standing by me. There were many ups and downs, but that’s life, and life is

10% what happens to you, 90% how you respond. With that said, the future looks bright, and TTIME is coming back stronger than ever for Year 7.!!”

The release of Walker frees up $5.5 million in 2024 salary cap space for the Lions, according to the Roster Management System.

Walker, aged 29, participated in all 17 games last season, starting six of them. He concluded the season with 59 tackles, 2 passes defended, 1 forced fumble, and 1 sack.

Selected by the Lions in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft as the 82nd overall pick from Louisiana, Walker played a significant role in the Lions’ secondary during much of his initial four seasons. Notably, he agreed to a three-year, $25 million extension on March 15, 2022, but suffered a torn Achilles in Week 3, causing him to miss the remainder of the 2022 season.

During the past season, Walker primarily served in a backup capacity, although he did start five games when C.J. Gardner-Johnson sustained a torn pectoral muscle. However, he lost his starting role in the latter half of the season to Ifeatu Melifonwu.

Walker has achieved over 100 tackles twice in his career, recording 103 tackles in 2019 and 108 tackles in 2021. Across 79 games, including 43 starts, he has accumulated 398 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 4 sacks.
