Phil Hay reveals two defenders that Leeds could have signed instead of Joe Rodon.

Phil Hay has revealed that Leeds United initially targeted Taylor Harwood-Bellis

and Nat Phillips before securing Joe Rodon on a loan agreement in the summer transfer window.

Rodon, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, has played a crucial role under Daniel Farke this season, featuring in 29 out of 33 Championship matches for Leeds.

However, it was reported by The Athletic journalist on February 21 that Manchester City’s Harwood-Bellis and Liverpool’s Phillips were also considered as potential options.

Rodon’s impact at Elland Road has been immense, and Leeds fans can only

speculate on how the season might have unfolded without his presence. The 26-year-old has exceeded expectations,

prompting speculation about the possibility of Leeds pursuing a permanent deal for the defender.

Harwood-Bellis possesses similar attributes to Rodon and may even offer a greater attacking threat, but Rodon has still established himself as one of the top

defenders in the division. Recently, he has formed a solid partnership with fellow countryman Ethan Ampadu, particularly in the absence of Pascal

Struijk due to injury. This partnership has been developing as they prepare for the Euro 2024 qualifier against Finland in March.

Signing Rodon on a permanent basis could come at a significant cost for Leeds, potentially requiring a hefty

investment. However, if Elland Road secures promotion to the Premier League next season, the investment could prove to be worthwhile.

Despite initially trailing behind, Leeds are now closing the gap on first position in the Championship, which was seemingly dominated by Leicester City.

With just nine points separating the two sides, an upcoming fixture between them could further narrow the gap to just six points.

Rodon’s defensive influence is clear, particularly considering the low number of goals conceded this season. Both

Leicester and Leeds currently share the top spot for the fewest goals conceded in the Championship.

The season is gearing up for an exciting and tense conclusion.
