Cheifs sign a punter who had rape issue

The Kansas City Chiefs are adding punter Matt Araiza to their roster. Araiza, who was previously embroiled in a lawsuit dropped by a woman alleging rape by San Diego State football players in 2021,

has been signed by the Chiefs, as confirmed by his agent, Joe Linta, and later by the team itself. Araiza expressed his pride and gratitude for the opportunity to continue his NFL career

with the Chiefs, thanking his family and friends for their steadfast support and expressing excitement for this new chapter with the reigning Super Bowl champions.

Araiza gained the moniker “Punt God” at San Diego State, where he received All-America recognition during the 2021 season. His powerful punts contributed to the Aztecs achieving a record-breaking

12-2 season during his senior year. Although drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft, Araiza was released shortly after the woman filed her lawsuit.

According to her allegations, she was 17 at the time and attending a party off-campus in October 2021 when Araiza, then 21, engaged in sexual activity with her in a side yard at a house. She further claimed that Araiza then brought her to a

bedroom where a group of men assaulted her. Araiza countered these claims, stating that he did not enter the house during the party and left before the alleged assault occurred.

The woman reported the incident to the San Diego police the following day, and the lawsuit was filed in August 2022. Araiza, along with most of the other players named in the lawsuit, asserted that their interactions with her were consensual.
