It’s widely understood that the New York Jets will be actively seeking offensive linemen in free agency.

Nonetheless, according to Brad Spielberger from Pro Football Focus, who shared insights on “The NFL Stock

Exchange Podcast,” the Jets are specifically targeting spending on the center position.

Should the Jets decide to allocate funds towards the center position, it could result in further adjustments along the offensive line.

In the 2023 draft, the Jets used the No. 43 overall pick in the second round to select Joe Tippmann. According to Jets team reporter Ethan Greenberg, Tippmann

was the first “pure center” chosen by the team in the draft since Nick Mangold in 2006. Tippmann had an impressive rookie season, appearing in 16 out of 17 games and starting in 14 of them. Throughout most of the season,

Tippmann primarily played at center, accumulating 653 snaps in that position.

Additionally, he gained experience at right guard early in the year, taking 199 snaps in that role.

Tippmann’s performance was notable enough to earn him a nomination as a

first-team member of the Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie team at the center position.

Despite Tippmann demonstrating versatility by playing at guard, the Jets shouldn’t feel compelled to make

decisions solely based on that. The team should have already gleaned a valuable lesson from the situation with Alijah Vera-Tucker.

AVT has showcased his versatility by playing four out of the five positions on

the offensive line since joining the league. He has been sidelined for 23 out of 51 potential games due to various

injuries. Head coach Robert Saleh acknowledged at the end of the season that the frequent position changes may have played a role in his injury woes.

Tippmann has displayed potential as a center. It would be wise to keep him in that role, allowing him to gain

experience, improve, and become the team’s primary center option for both the present and future.

There are numerous guard options both in free agency and the upcoming 2024

NFL draft, negating the necessity to relocate Tippmann. Such a move would be unnecessary.

In the latest updates regarding Jets’ free agency rumors, there has been a subtle

association with Tennessee Titans offensive lineman Aaron Brewer for several months. Sources suggest that

Brewer is a potential target for the Jets in free agency. This information has also been supported by other team insiders such as Rich Cimini of ESPN and Will Parkinson.

While initially, I took note of this information, I didn’t give it much serious

consideration. Brewer, during the previous season, started all 17 games for the Titans, exclusively playing at the center position for 1,049 snaps.

Upon hearing about the potential interest in Brewer by the Jets, I initially questioned why they would pursue a center when they already have

Tippmann in that role. However, considering the information about

Brewer and Spielberger’s insight into the Jets’ plans to invest in the center position, it began to add up.

In theory, if the Jets were to acquire Brewer, they could deploy him as the center and move Tippmann to guard. Brewer initially entered the league as an undrafted free agent from Texas State back in 2020.

In the past four years, he has participated in 58 games, starting in 40 of them. Between 2022 and 2023, Brewer has consecutively started in 34 games, a streak that continues into the off season.

Prior to assuming a full-time starting role at center in 2023, Brewer primarily gained NFL experience as a guard.

Throughout his career, he has accumulated 1,299 snaps at left guard and 209 snaps at right guard.

According to Pro Football Focus grades, Brewer is coming off his most impressive

season yet. In 2023, he attained an overall grade of 71.6, with a run block grade of 78.7 and a pass block grade of 52.5.

At 26 years old, Brewer is anticipated to secure a three-year contract worth $15.7

million, as projected by Spotrac’s market value estimates. This annual salary of

$5.2 million would position him as the 11th highest-paid center in the NFL, based on Over The Cap’s rankings.
