just in:Rams’ offensive line is in a Terrible situation

Rams’ offensive line is in flux as the offseason begins.

The Rams initiated their first offseason roster change by releasing veteran center Brian Allen on Wednesday. Allen,

part of the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI-winning squad, will be designated as a post-June 1 cut, enabling him to enter

free agency early and saving the Rams $4.8 million in salary cap space. This move marks the beginning of potential alterations along the offensive line, which could shape the Rams’ offseason.

In the upcoming month, the Rams may see two starters hit free agency. Right guard Kevin Dotson is set to become an

unrestricted free agent, and General Manager Les Snead expressed interest in retaining Dotson if his contract terms align. Additionally, center Coleman Shelton has the option to void the final year of his contract and become a free

agent in March. Shelton, an undrafted free agent, would earn a $2 million base salary plus an additional $1 million in bonuses if he chooses to activate the last year of his contract.

However, Shelton played in all 18 games for the Rams in the recent season, showcasing his value. He stood out as

one of the league’s more effective run blockers in his position while allowing only two sacks in 664 pass-blocking opportunities.

During a Zoom call with reporters, Rams head coach Sean McVay revealed that Vice President of Football and Business Administration Tony Pastoors and Football Administration Manager

Matthew Shearin are actively engaged with Shelton’s representatives to negotiate a contract that would keep him in Los Angeles. Shelton, who attended Loyola High in Los Angeles, is a player the Rams are eager to retain.

McVay expressed the team’s proactive approach in working towards securingShelton’s return, stating, “We would really like to get him back. I would

imagine that that’s the direction that they would potentially go. We’re proactively trying to get that taken care of. He’s a guy we want to move forward with.”

Despite these efforts, the Rams will face another challenging decision regarding a backup lineman.

Rams utility lineman Joe Noteboom is set to carry a $20 million cap hit for the team in 2024, making it the third-highest on the roster after quarterback Matthew Stafford, defensive tackle Aaron Donald, and receiver Cooper Kupp. The Rams have the potential to free up $5 million

in cap space by releasing Noteboom, who lost his starting position at right guard to Dotson in Week 5 but filled in at both tackle positions later in the season.

Coach McVay acknowledged that the team is currently evaluating various roster decisions, including Noteboom’s

situation. He commended Noteboom for his versatility on the offensive line, stating, “We’re working through all those things right now. We’ll see what that

looks like as it relates to his status moving forward, but Joe’s been a big-time contributor, and certainly, we wouldn’t have done a lot of things without Joe.”
