Bad News : why Veteran playmaker refuses to sign with the Jets ahead of free agency

Veteran playmaker refuses to sign with the Jets ahead of free agency

One impending free agent has made it clear that he has no intentions of joining the New York Jets this offseason.

During a discussion about his plans to explore free agency, Mecole Hardman

was asked by NFL Network host Andrew Siciliano about the possibility of returning to the Jets.

Hardman’s response was straightforward: “No, I won’t be returning to the Jets.”

Hardman initially signed with the Jets during the previous offseason on a one-year contract worth $4 million.

According to Rich Cimini of ESPN, one of the factors that attracted the talented wide receiver to New York was a promise made to him during free agency.

“In Kansas City, he was primarily utilized for plays at the line of scrimmage, such as jet sweeps and bubble screens, as well

as on vertical routes, without much variation in between. The Jets assured him that he would have the opportunity to expand his route repertoire within

their offensive scheme,” Cimini stated in April of 2023, emphasizing the Jets’ belief in Hardman’s potential to excel on intermediate routes.

Several months later, a disgruntled Hardman sought an exit due to his

frustration with a lack of utilization. The Jets consequently traded Hardman and a

seventh-round pick in the 2025 draft to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the same draft, just before the trade deadline.

Hardman would go on to play a pivotal role for the Chiefs, notably catching the game-winning touchdown in overtime of the Super Bowl.

As Hardman’s impending free agency looms, it seems unlikely that a return to the Jets was ever on the table. The sentiment would likely be mutual, as

Hardman did not have a positive experience in New York, and it appears the Jets did not receive the expected value from their investment in him.
