The Detroit Lions to make one big free-agent signing this offseason

The Detroit Lions are poised to potentially make a significant free-agent acquisition this offseason.

Following the announcement of a $30 million increase in the salary cap, teams

with prudent management of signings now have the flexibility to consider taking calculated risks on free agents.

ESPN recently proposed bold moves for all 32 NFL teams in anticipation of the 2024 NFL combine.

For the Lions, there has been substantial discussion about bolstering the defense through both the draft and free agency.

Author Aaron Schatz recommended that the Lions focus on acquiring one of the

premier defensive tackles in the league to strengthen a unit lacking in pass-rushing capabilities.

Chris Jones of the Kansas City Chiefs is expected to be highly sought after in free agency for his exceptional ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks.

This offseason, the Lions, having secured a division championship and possessing

cap space for improvements, are likely to be linked to numerous major free agents,

particularly on the defensive front, according to Schatz. Amid discussions about veteran additions to break the

Super Bowl drought, Schatz suggests that the optimal choice would be someone with three Super Bowl victories, such as the Chiefs’ Jones.

In the previous season, the Lions struggled, ranking 27th in pass-rush win rate at 35.8%. The challenges, including the consistent double-teaming of Aidan

Hutchinson and James Houston’s injury, made it challenging for Aaron Glenn to generate pressure without relying heavily on blitzing.

Despite facing frequent double teams, Jones excelled with a second-place

ranking in pass-rush win rate at 19.6%. Schatz proposes that the Lions could sign Jones, deploying him as the 3-technique

tackle, while allowing Levi Onwuzurike to come off the bench. Recognizing that Jones played a substantial 73% of snaps

in active games last season, Schatz acknowledges the importance of providing the defensive lineman occasional rest.

Undoubtedly, the addition of Jones could significantly elevate the Lions’ effectiveness in generating a formidable pass rush.
