Just in: potential issue in Browns pursuit of Mike Evans.

Reporter identifies potential issue in Browns pursuit of Mike Evans.

As the start of the 2024 offseason approaches, talks are heating up about who the Cleveland Browns will target in free agency.

One of the first things they’re expected to do is target a top-tier wide receiver like Mike Evans, Tee Higgins, or Gabe Davis.

However, the Bengals placed a franchise tag on Higgins, so he is no longer an option, leaving Evans, Davis, and Calvin Ridley as outside options.

Unfortunately, Mary Kay Cabot, a long-time Browns insider and writer for Cleveland.com, notes that Evans may not be an option either.

According to Cabot, Evans will be the top wide receiver on the market this offseason, and possibly the best player.

As a result, he’ll command a high price, with Spotrac estimating he’ll earn more than $23 million per season.

That would make Evans the Browns’ highest-paid wide receiver, earning $3 million more than Amari Cooper.

It would also make him the Browns’ second-most expensive player, behind only Deshaun Watson.

The Browns are also just over $7 million over the salary cap, which means they will need to clear significant space if they want to pursue Evans.

While $23 million may seem like a lot of money for a wide receiver, Evans is well worth it.

He has at least 1,000 receiving yards in each of his first ten NFL seasons and has scored more than ten touchdowns five times.

After a successful year with 79 catches for 1,255 yards and 13 touchdowns, it’s possible that Davis or Ridley are better options for the Browns.
