Former chiefs Offensive coordinator Gets a New job and will not be returning to KC

Former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has secured a new coaching position, but it won’t be a

return to the Chiefs’ sideline. Bieniemy is heading back to the college football realm, with his next destination being a

familiar one. According to reports from Pete Thamel and Adam Schefter of ESPN,

Bieniemy is in the final stages of negotiating a two-year contract to serve

as the associate head coach/offensive coordinator for the UCLA Bruins, under

the leadership of new head coach DeShaun Foster.

Thamel and Schefter’s report sheds light on Bieniemy’s journey back to UCLA.

Despite receiving offers to remain in the NFL, including interviews for the head-

coaching role with the Washington Commanders and two other offensive

coordinator positions, Bieniemy opted to return to the collegiate level. He

disclosed that one NFL team proposed an assistant head coach/running backs

position to him. However, after careful consideration, Bieniemy chose to

prioritize his values and aspirations over financial incentives. In his own words, “It

is not always about money… At this time in my life, the opportunity affords me the

pleasure of continuing to be a maker and leader of men, to do what I love, follow

my passion and my dreams while not compromising on who I am as a man.”

Bieniemy notably served as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022,

contributing to the team’s success in winning two Super Bowls during his

tenure. Despite his achievements, Bieniemy departed to join the

Washington Commanders as their offensive coordinator in 2023, following

his unsuccessful pursuit of an NFL head coaching position. This move came as a

departure from the trajectory of Andy Reid’s previous offensive coordinators in

Kansas City—Doug Pederson and Matt Nagy—who both secured head coaching

roles in the NFL after shorter tenures as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator.

In the lead-up to Super Bowl LVIII, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid revealed that Bieniemy had addressed the team ahead

of their AFC Championship Game clash with the Baltimore Ravens, indicating

ongoing communication between Bieniemy and the Chiefs organization.

Bieniemy addressed the team prior to their AFC Championship Game against

the Baltimore Ravens. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid confirmed this, stating, “He did, he actually came in and talked to our

team before our last game. He spoke with the offensive players and participated in our meetings. I’ve had the opportunity to converse with him. He’s still in the

running for a couple of positions.” When asked about Bieniemy’s coaching prospects and the possibility of him returning to Kansas City in 2024 if other

opportunities didn’t materialize, Reid responded, “I can’t address the latter part because we currently have no vacancies.

However, I believe his coaching future is bright. I’m a big admirer of his, and I’m aware of his capabilities.”

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shared his thoughts on Bieniemy’s

influence leading up to the AFC Championship Game, echoing sentiments

frequently expressed by himself and other Chiefs players. Mahomes emphasized the unique energy that

Bieniemy brings to the team, remarking, “It’s always uplifting to have EB around. His presence, the energy he exudes, and

his mindset are palpable. He brings an intensity that is contagious, but at the same time, he genuinely enjoys it. He relishes being part of the team and

contributing to our culture. Having him back with us was truly special. Hearing him speak and feeling his energy, you

could see the impact it had on the guys. It’s like, ‘EB’s back.’ While he may not have landed a head coaching

opportunity, I’m excited for him to continue coaching football and leaving his mark on the game.”
