The Detroit Lions enter 2024 with high expectations following their impressive journey to the NFC Championship Game. They are now considered top contenders

to potentially represent the NFC in the upcoming Super Bowl. However, despite their success, the team still needs to address several areas of weakness. As

they enter a pivotal offseason, they have the opportunity to capitalize on their championship aspirations.

With an increase in cap space, the Lions have the financial means to make significant moves in free agency. However, whether they choose to do so

remains uncertain. They may opt to focus on the NFL Draft in April as their primary method of roster building.

During a discussion on the NFL Stock Exchange Podcast, Trevor Sikkema and Brad Spielberger deliberated on whether

the Lions should adopt an aggressive approach in free agency this offseason. Spielberger advocated for Detroit

focusing on the trenches, should they decide to enhance their roster through free agency.

 

“I believe trenches are the priority for them. If they opt to spend, it should be on bolstering both offensive and defensive lines,” Spielberger elaborated.

“Considering that both Jonah Jackson and Graham Glasgow, who served as their guards last year, are impending

free agents, it’s essential to address these positions. Glasgow, being a seasoned player, and Jackson, a younger talent who some anticipate will receive a

substantial contract, are both key considerations. Personally, I have slightly lower expectations for Jackson compared to others.”

The team could justify acquiring reinforcements on both the offensive and defensive lines, as well as potentially focusing on bolstering the defensive backfield.

 

“Yeah, I believe they could either strengthen those areas or alternatively, could they complement Aidan

Hutchinson and Alim McNeill in the trenches? Additionally, they could target the defensive backs,” Spielberger

suggested. “For instance, if they were to sign players like Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, who missed a significant portion of the previous season, or

Emmanuel Moseley, whose absence was felt, it could significantly improve their secondary. While the Lions typically

follow a draft-and-develop approach, I anticipate we may see some deviations under Brad Holmes’ leadership. His end-of-season press conference was

impressive. However, it’s essential to avoid adhering to a philosophy solely for the sake of having one.”

As highlighted by both hosts, the Lions have a significant chance to enhance their roster in preparation for a potential Super Bowl contention in the upcoming seasons.

“It’s crucial to grasp the context of your roster. Currently, this team has the potential to align well with a standout free agent, and they should seize the

opportunity,” Spielberger emphasized. “They’re a formidable football team, undeniably one of the top five in the NFC. Given the competitiveness of the

conference, it might be necessary to deviate from established priorities at times, and I believe this offseason could be one of those occasions.”
