The NFL have ban one controversial tackling method

The NFL seems poised to address a controversial tackling technique,

indicating that a ban may be imminent. The league’s competition committee announced on Sunday that they are in

agreement about prohibiting the hip-drop tackle, with the remaining task being to formulate the appropriate wording for a rule alteration.

A hip-drop tackle involves a defender wrapping up the offensive player and then twisting or falling to the ground using their entire body weight, often

resulting in the defender landing on the offensive player’s leg and increasing the risk of injury. This tackling method gained attention following significant

injuries suffered by Ravens tight end Mark Andrews and Tony Pollard during the 2023 postseason.

Initially, the NFLPA opposed such a ban, expressing concerns that it could render

defensive players’ tasks unfeasible. Consequently, the specific language

employed in any rule modification will be crucial, although it seems evident that the sport is moving in this direction.
