After months of anticipation for a potential departure to the Big Apple, Zach Wilson appears to be edging closer

to that scenario. The Jets have granted permission to the former No. 2 overall pick to explore trade opportunities, announced Joe Douglas on Wednesday.

Given the ongoing trade speculation surrounding Wilson, including his exploration of potential fits elsewhere, this development doesn’t come as a

surprise. Initially, the Jets will attempt to trade the three-year starter, who is rumored to potentially fetch a late-round pick in exchange.

Having been supplanted as the Jets’ starting quarterback by Aaron Rodgers,

Wilson was previously benched for Mike White. The Jets have essentially acknowledged their missteps by not acquiring a veteran option to challenge

Wilson for the QB2 role and failing to secure one after Rodgers’ Achilles injury. Consequently, they are prepared to move forward without him.

The Jets’ decision coincides with the likelihood of the Bears trading Justin Fields. Meanwhile, Trey Lance, the No. 3

overall pick from the 2021 draft, has already been traded from the 49ers to the Cowboys, and Mac Jones’ future with the Patriots seems uncertain. Among the

2021 QB class, which featured five first-rounders, only Trevor Lawrence, the No. 1 pick, is guaranteed to be his team’s starter in 2024.

For the Jets, this separation marks familiar territory, as their repeated investments in first- and second-round quarterbacks have failed to yield a long-

term solution. The team traded Sam Darnold after three seasons and opted not to re-sign Geno Smith or Mark Sanchez. Christian Hackenberg famously

never played an NFL snap. Wilson’s selection as the once highly touted BYU prospect at second overall has placed significant pressure on Douglas and

Robert Saleh to deliver results. They have this year to convince owner Woody Johnson that they deserve to retain their positions.
