During the upcoming 2024 off-season, the Green Bay Packers will focus heavily

on revamping their defensive unit, having already made significant changes to their coaching staff. As they seek new

leaders for their defense, the team is eyeing several safety prospects, one of whom has generated considerable buzz across the league.

 

At the Combine, the Packers had an informal meeting with Miami safety Kamren Kinchens, who is widely regarded as the second-best safety in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. Kinchens, a

junior in 2023, appeared in 10 games and participated in 638 snaps. He contributed 52 tackles, 11 assists, and 13 stops, showcasing his versatility. Additionally,

Kinchens registered 2 pass breakups, 5 interceptions, and held opposing quarterbacks to a modest rating of 111.9 when targeted.

 

With three picks in the first two rounds, it will be intriguing to see if the Packers opt to select Kinchens to bolster their defensive backfield.

Strengths:

 

Kinchens possesses ideal athleticism for the safety position, primarily excelling as a center fielder for the Miami Hurricanes. His ability to cover both

sides of the field showcases his versatility, making him a formidable blitzer even when not positioned in the box, exemplified by his sack of UNC quarterback Drake Maye in 2023.

 

Playing with a high level of intensity, Kinchens demonstrates a relentless motor regardless of the play’s direction.

This enables him to clean up defensive breakdowns effectively, a valuable trait for a center fielder.

 

His physical frame is well-suited for the safety position, allowing him to effectively line up in the box and

contribute against the run. Kinchens is known for his powerful hitting and fearlessness when engaging in contact.

 

Weaknesses:

 

While Kinchens’ decisive nature complements his explosive playing style, it occasionally leads him to bite on fakes and become out of position, which poses a risk as the last line of defense.

 

Despite his effectiveness as a clean-up tackler, Kinchens struggles with his pursuit angles, often taking aggressive

angles that provide ball carriers with lanes. Improving his angles of pursuit will be crucial for his success at the professional level.

Kinchens faces challenges when defending against long-developing routes and can be confused in two-high

coverage schemes. This vulnerability may be exacerbated in the NFL due to the complexity of route trees, highlighting an area for improvement.
