Tom Thibodeau provides a major injury update on the Knicks’ defensive ace

New York Knicks’ defensive standout OG Anunoby is nearing his comeback, as Tom Thibodeau revealed that he has been given the green light for non-contact on-court activities.

“He can shoot, dribble, and pass. No contact drills yet, but that’s the next step,” Thibodeau informed reporters ahead of the Knicks’ game against the Golden State Warriors at Madison Square Garden on Thursday, February 29.

Thursday’s matchup against the Warriors marks the 13th game Anunoby has missed since his elbow issue arose during a game in Charlotte on January 29. The Knicks have posted a 6-6 record in the 12 games played without Anunoby. With him in the lineup since his acquisition from Toronto on December 31 last year, they boasted a 12-2 record.

Anunoby expressed optimism about his return before the playoffs, stating, “Yeah, for sure [I’ll be back before the playoffs], hopefully. Just following the doctors’ orders, following the medical staff, just progressing day by day. I’m feeling better and better every day. So, yeah. I want to be back as soon as possible. I’m definitely excited to get back. I think the whole team is excited to play together again and go on another run.”

During his initial 14 games with the Knicks, Anunoby averaged 15.6 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.8 steals, and 1.1 blocks. The team held the league-best defensive rating of 104.1 points per 100 possessions during that span.
