Will Ohio State’s Sonny Styles move to linebacker?

Ohio State Buckeyes safety Sonny Styles is considering a position change to linebacker ahead of the 2024 season, according to comments made by teammate Josh Proctor. Proctor

expressed his anticipation of Styles transitioning to linebacker, citing his physical development in the weight room and his comfort level in that role.

“Sonny’s probably gonna be a linebacker,” Proctor stated. “He keeps putting on weight. I feel like he’d be comfortable there.” Proctor also praised

Styles’ intelligence and versatility, noting his ability to adapt and excel anywhere on the field.

“He’s a physical guy,” Proctor added. “He’s smart. He knows the game. He knows everybody’s spot on the defense. Anywhere you can put him, he’ll get the job done.”

The speculation about Styles’ potential position change arose after Ohio State’s

new safeties coach, Matt Guerrieri, mentioned plans to evaluate Styles’ skills across various positions on the field.

“Without going into specifics, we’re going to take a look at a number of different things for him and put him in the best

position for him to be successful and the team to be successful,” Guerrieri explained.

Former Ohio State linebacker Tommy Eichenberg also expressed support for Styles’ transition, stating that it would be exciting to see him play at linebacker.

“He’s a really good football player,” Eichenberg remarked. “He’s been really

impressive covering man-to-man on slot receivers. For him to play linebacker, that would be awesome.”
