Alex Neil’s short Sunderland stint

The Scotsman was appointed as the Black Cats’ head coach in 2022 when they were in League One, inheriting a side that were firmly in the mix for promotion, but there was huge pressure to reach the Championship.

And, after two years of failure, Neil was the man to get the side back to the second tier, as they beat Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley to win the play-offs.

Even though they were promoted, Neil would quit early in the next season, upsetting the Sunderland faithful with his contentious choice to join Stoke City.

When he played Sunderland with the Potters, the former Norwich manager

drew harsh criticism for the way he left, and it’s safe to say that he’s still not well-liked on Wearside.

Alex Neil praises Sunderland fans

Neil’s tenure at the Stadium of Light has returned to prominence in recent weeks

due to the successful promotion campaign that was covered in the most

current season of Sunderland ‘Til I Die, which debuted on Netflix.

As a result, the 42-year-old was questioned about his tenure at the team.

According to the Sunderland Echo, Neil was ecstatic about everyone associated

with Sunderland when he spoke with BBC Norfolk.

“Hey, amazing, I just have wonderful memories from Sunderland. It was, I

believe, our second home game against MK Dons, and after that, I believe we hadn’t lost in twenty games.

To be honest, the tale wasn’t all that different from Norwich. According to the Norwich tale, I believe we won 17 of the 24 games we played. We made it to the play-off final and were quite good, so it wasn’t all that different from what we had to do.

The semi-final against Sheffield Wednesday, although it wasn’t as close rivals as the likes of Ipswich, it was equally tense, two well-matched teams. We managed to find a way to get ourselves through it and go and get promoted. As I say, wonderful club, absolute die-hard fans, great memories.”

Alex Neil open to Sunderland return

The Black Cats’ season has been difficult, and they still have a long way to go before they can make the playoffs.

Michael Beale unexpectedly took over as head coach in December after Tony Mowbray left, however the former

Rangers general manager only held the position for two months. Assistant Mike

Dodds managed the team’s operations for the rest of the season.

After that, a permanent appointment will be made by the hierarchy, and rumors have it that Neil would be open to rejoining the team. Though he is not the first manager to have difficulties at the Bet365 Stadium, he is currently without a club after losing his position at Stoke.

Neil’s chances of being seriously considered for the post are slim to none, and as previously said, the appointment is unlikely to be well received by the fans.
