Phillies catcher is involved in a very bad  accident that his career may be over

 

Due to Rafael Marchán, the Phillies’ third-string catcher, facing another injury setback, the team has found itself

in need of additional catching depth. To address this issue, the Philadelphia Phillies recently signed catcher Cam Gallagher to a minor league contract.

This signing was announced by the team last Sunday and includes an invitation to the major league spring training camp as a non-roster invitee.

 

Initially, this move seemed to be aimed at bolstering the team’s organizational depth, as the Phillies primarily rely on

just three catchers within their system who are considered suitable for major league play: J.T. Realmuto, Garrett

Stubbs, and Rafael Marchán. Their next most promising catching prospect, Caleb Ricketts, is still in the developmental stages while playing in High-A.

Upon closer examination, the signing of Cam Gallagher serves as an insurance

measure for the Phillies, particularly due to the current injury status of third-string catcher Rafael Marchán. Marchán

is currently dealing with a minor back injury, which was disclosed before the Grapefruit League games commenced last weekend.

Marchán initially sustained the injury while participating in Winter ball for the Tigres de Aragua of the Venezuelan

Winter League, just before the playoffs. He began experiencing discomfort in his back during this time, ultimately cutting

short what had been a productive season for Marchán with the Tigres. Across 32 games, he posted impressive statistics, batting .333 with a .982 OPS. He scored

18 runs, recorded 10 doubles, three home runs, and 23 RBI, while displaying good plate discipline with 16 walks and just 11 strikeouts. Additionally, Marchán

showcased solid defensive skills behind the plate, committing zero errors and successfully throwing out 30 percent of base stealers.

Before the conclusion of the Winter season, Marchán had conveyed optimism about his condition in an interview with Meridiano, stating that the physical

discomfort he experienced at the end of December had subsided. His primary goal was to regain fitness swiftly and be prepared as soon as possible.

 

“I feel good. The physical discomfort that I had at the end of the month of December, thank God, is gone,” Marchán

informed Meridiano. “The most important thing is that I am now with the team again, doing everything to be ready as soon as possible.”

 

Unfortunately, Marchán’s back issues have resurfaced with the onset of March,

raising additional concerns. Injuries have plagued Marchán over the past two seasons, with a left hamstring injury in

2022 sidelining him for two months and a fractured hamate bone in his right wrist in 2023 keeping him out of action for nearly three months.

 

Given Marchán’s recurring injury history, the Phillies are likely taking a cautious approach by signing Gallagher

as a contingency plan for the team. Gallagher, a seven-year MLB veteran, has primarily served as a backup catcher for

the Kansas City Royals and Cleveland Guardians. In his 227 career games, he has posted a batting average of .211 with 47 runs scored, 33 doubles, seven home

runs, and 46 RBI. Defensively, he has thrown out 21 percent of base stealers and has maintained a solid .992 fielding percentage.

Hopefully, Marchán will recover swiftly and return to action soon. Nonetheless, the addition of Gallagher provides the

Phillies with a reliable backup plan to ensure they are well-prepared for the upcoming 2024 season.
