Phillies Spring Training Update: Walker Injury, Turner Feeling Good, and Suarez’s Debut 

 

 

Spring training is in full swing, providing the Phillies with ample opportunities to assess their roster. They’ve had a week of

real games, allowing them to evaluate both everyday players and those vying for roster spots. It’s an exciting time to

observe how players have adjusted their approaches and enhanced their skills, though it’s essential not to overreact or underreact to injuries and performances.

 

In the latest updates from the Phillies’ 2024 camp, Ranger Suárez made an impressive start to his spring training.

During his outing against the Detroit Tigers on Friday, he delivered three scoreless innings, conceding only one hit

and no walks. Suárez demonstrated consistency and precision, throwing 38 pitches, with 26 of them being strikes. His pitching repertoire, as usual,

featured a mix of ground-ball outs, flyouts, and strikeouts, with four ground-ball outs, three flyouts, and two strikeouts. Suárez showcased a sinker

ranging from 90 to 92 mph, complemented by an 86 mph cutter and a curveball in the 74-76 mph range.

The Phillies are optimistic that 28-year-old Ranger Suárez is poised to make

significant strides for them, and his impressive start in spring training serves as a promising indicator.

Meanwhile, Trea Turner, who faced challenges during his initial season with

the Phillies, is expressing early optimism and comfort in the 2024 camp. Turner’s struggles in finding his swing during the

early parts of the previous season are well-known, but he notably improved in the latter stages, aligning with the Phillies’ expectations when they signed

him. Having completed a year in the organization, Turner feels more at ease and positive just one week into the 2024 camp. He attributes his late-season

success to the extensive work he put in to rediscover his swing and aims to replicate that success by maintaining the same “feel” with his swing.

 

In an interview with MLB.com’s Paul Casella, Turner shared, “Those last 40, 50, 60 games, I kind of figured out what all those feels are again.” While he acknowledges that these feelings may not

have fully translated into the games this spring due to early stages, Turner expresses confidence in his work, feeling good in the cage, and having a clear

vision of the ball. His performance in the four spring games supports this optimism, with four hits, including two doubles, and one walk over 11 plate

appearances. Notably, he has struck out only once, addressing an issue that posed a challenge for him in 2023.

Following his strong performance, going 2-for-3 with an RBI in Thursday’s 5-0 victory, Turner expressed, “I feel like the

swing is kind of where it was at the end of last year. I feel like I learned a lot last year and I’ve kind of carried that over to

my work now, and it just feels good.” The Phillies and their fans are eager to see Turner maintain this level of comfort and performance throughout the entirety of the 2024 season.
