Mike Evans’ agent, Deryk Gilmore, has outlined his client’s priorities for free agency.

 

“Mike desires to join a team with an exceptional quarterback in an offensive system that highlights his talents,”

Gilmore told Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report. “He also seeks compensation befitting a top-tier wide receiver. It’s

essential for him to avoid situations where he would be paired with a rookie quarterback. Winning a Super Bowl remains a top goal.”

 

Evans’ preferences for his next team, particularly if he doesn’t stay with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and enters free

agency for the first time, appear to align with what the Philadelphia Eagles can offer.

After completing his tenth consecutive season with over 1,000 receiving yards, Evans emerges as the exact type of

player that general manager Howie Roseman and the Eagles should prioritize once free agency commences on March 13th.

Despite the prolific duo of A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, who amassed a total of 2,522 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2023,

Roseman and the Eagles struggled with inconsistent third-receiver options throughout the season.

While the Eagles attempted to address this by signing Julio Jones, the veteran’s production was minimal, totaling just 11 receptions for 74 yards and three

touchdowns. In contrast, Olamide Zaccheaus and Quez Watkins combined for 69 receptions, 306 yards, and three touchdowns throughout the season.

As the Eagles gear up for the crucial 2024 season, signaling a make-or-break period for head coach Nick Sirianni, and with

quarterback Jalen Hurts seeking to rebound from a 2023 season that saw a slight regression from his MVP-caliber

performance in 2022, the addition of Evans could be a game-changing move capable of elevating the entire offense.

Integrating Evans into Hurts’ arsenal would position Philadelphia’s receiving corps on par with the Bengals’ trio of

Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Tyler Boyd, which fueled a Super Bowl run in 2021, ranking as one of the league’s most explosive units.

While it might be tempting to view Evans as a luxury, particularly with Smith entering the final year of his contract, the

Eagles experienced significant challenges in their passing offense during the playoff loss, highlighting the importance of having a field-stretcher opposite Evans.

Even with Brown and Evans combining for 270 targets in 2023, Hurts still directed passes towards Watkins, Zaccheaus, Jones, and Britain Covey a total of 66 times.

There’s a scenario where Brown, Smith, and Evans each receive between 115-120 targets and thrive in a vertical offensive

scheme. Moreover, considering that Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield achieved a 119.4 passer rating when targeting Evans last season, wouldn’t

Evans offer more reliability and upside for Hurts compared to Watkins, Zaccheaus, Jones, and Covey combined?

Evans amassed 79 receptions for 1,255 yards with 13 touchdowns last season, despite his team’s loss in the divisional playoffs against the Detroit Lions.

Incorporating Evans’ consistent production into the Eagles’ offense could widen Philadelphia’s Super Bowl prospects once again.
