|Chiefs’ Mecole Hardman denies leaking game plans to opposing teams while with the Jets.
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman refuted allegations suggesting that he divulged offensive game plans to opposing teams during his time with the New York Jets last season.
Following reports suggesting that he leaked game plans out of frustration over
lack of usage, Hardman took to social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, to address the accusations on Friday.
“There were FALSE accusations made about me and MY CHARACTER! To set the record straight, I have never and would never leak game plans to another team,”
Hardman stated. “I have never been a person to give an opponent an upper hand I always want to win no matter the circumstances!!!!!”
Hardman’s response came in light of SNY’s Connor Hughes’ report, which suggested that there’s a “validated belief” within the Jets organization regarding
Hardman’s alleged involvement in leaking New York’s offensive strategies before matchups against the Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.
Hardman’s tenure with the Jets began last offseason when he signed a one-year contract after spending four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. However, he
quickly found himself surpassed on New York’s depth chart at both wide receiver and returner by undrafted rookie Xavier Gipson. Hardman’s playing time was
limited, as he only saw action in five games, recording just 28 offensive snaps and catching one pass for six yards out of three targets.
During his brief stint with the Jets, they faced the Chiefs in Week 4, losing 23-20,
and secured a victory against the Eagles in Week 6 with a score of 20-14. Following the win over Philadelphia, the
Jets traded Hardman, along with a 2025 seventh-round pick, to the Chiefs in exchange for a 2025 sixth-rounder.
Subsequently, Hardman played a pivotal role in the Chiefs’ journey to victory in
Super Bowl LVIII, where he caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes.
Reflecting on his time with the Jets during an interview on “The Pivot Podcast,” Hardman expressed criticism towards the team, particularly
highlighting the lack of a standardized approach within the offensive coaching staff. He mentioned feeling disconnected and disengaged leading up to the Jets’
game against Kansas City in Week 4, noting that he had already communicated with Chiefs GM Brett Veach and Mahomes at that point.
Hardman took to X to clarify his previous comments, stating that he never engaged in talks with Kansas City before the
trade, thereby refuting any suggestions of tampering. He commended the Jets for handling the trade independently and returning him to Kansas City.
Following Hardman’s remarks, it remained uncertain whether the Jets would pursue potential tampering
allegations against the Chiefs. Jets GM Joe Douglas acknowledged that Hardman’s statements had caught their attention.
In response to Hardman’s comments, several Jets players seemed to weigh in on X. Cornerback Sauce Gardner hinted at the possibility of the offensive game
plan being leaked against the Eagles in a now-deleted post. Tight end Kenny Yeboah, when asked about Hardman, made a deleted comment suggesting that
Hardman should focus on his own work ethic rather than discussing the leaked game plan against the Eagles, referencing players from Georgia, which
is also Hardman’s alma mater. Punter Thomas Morstead indirectly addressed Hardman’s situation in a post about
“disgruntled former employees,” emphasizing the importance of earning opportunities and the pitfalls of entitlement.
