Deshea Townsend, the new Lions’ defensive backs coach, sends a message to new pupils.

 

 

Deshea Townsend has been brought in to lead a significant improvement in the Lions’ pass defense, and he’s wasted no time in making his intentions clear to his new players.

 

Following yet another season of struggles for the pass defense, the Detroit Lions have opted for a change in leadership for their secondary. Deshea Townsend

assumes the role of defensive backs coach and defensive pass game coordinator. This move comes after the departure of former defensive backs

coach Brian Duker, who joined the Miami Dolphins, and the non-retention of cornerbacks coach Dre’ Bly after just one season.

Townsend, who spent 11 seasons as a cornerback in the NFL, primarily with the Pittsburgh Steelers, has been involved in coaching since 2011. Most

recently, he served as the cornerbacks coach and passing game coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars over the past two seasons.

During the NFL Combine this week, Lions head coach Dan Campbell expressed confidence in Townsend’s

ability to execute the defensive strategy envisioned by defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.

According to Justin Rogers of the Detroit News, Townsend has long admired

Glenn, dating back to his own entry into the NFL when Glenn established himself as a standout cornerback in the league.

Townsend is currently conducting a thorough assessment of the players he has inherited while simultaneously

delving into evaluations of draft prospects and impending free agents, as the Lions aim to revamp their cornerback depth chart.

During his inaugural meeting with Lions beat writers at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis this week, Townsend wasted no time in delivering a clear

message to his new charges in the Detroit secondary. He emphasized the importance of tackling, stating unequivocally, “If you won’t tackle, you

won’t play.” Townsend stressed the need for players who embrace contact and demonstrate a willingness to engage physically on the field.

 

The Lions’ defense received a low tackling grade according to Pro Football Focus last season, ranking fifth-worst in the league. While this deficiency cannot

be solely attributed to the secondary, Townsend is committed to ensuring his unit plays a significant role in addressing this issue.

positions while encouraging starters to maintain their positions through consistent performance. This ethos
