It’s not panic time yet for the Knicks, but it is getting close.

Night after night, game after game, the Knicks are subjected to a wide range of consolation-level compliments. This time,

it was Stan Van Gundy, commentating courtside for TNT, who repeatedly described them on Thursday night as

“admirable,” “inspirational,” and every conceivable derivative of “gritty,” “crafty,” and “game.”

However, what Van Gundy couldn’t acknowledge at any point during the game against the Warriors was their

“winning” or even “leading” status. Golden State took control early, scoring the game’s first 14 points and ultimately defeating the Knicks 110-99. This loss

marked the end of February for the Knicks, a month in which they lost eight of the 12 games they played.

February brought a notable shift for the Knicks, akin to the proverbial lion and lamb scenario of March. They began the month as hopeful contenders but concluded it as struggling survivors. At the start of February, there was genuine optimism about their potential to secure a high seed in the Eastern Conference. However, by the end of the month, concerns had arisen about their ability to avoid the play-in tournament.

While there are understandable reasons for the Knicks’ February struggles, including injuries and setbacks, individuals like Van Gundy still commend their resilience and energy. Nevertheless, the Knicks, led by coach Tom Thibodeau, are growing weary of such praise. Thibodeau acknowledges the reality of coaching the team he has, not the one he wishes for.

Thibodeau undoubtedly envisions what his ideal Knicks lineup could achieve, especially against formidable opponents like the Warriors. However, injuries have disrupted their roster, leaving them to battle with the players available. Despite their determination, fatigue from the condensed NBA schedule has caught up with the Knicks.

As February ends, there’s a legitimate concern about whether the Knicks have already reached their peak earlier in the season. Their impressive performances in late January, notably against finalists from the previous NBA season, now feel like a distant memory, overshadowed by injuries to key players like Julius Randle and OG Anunoby.
