MLB insider reveals that Rangers are set sign two free agents

An MLB insider suggests that the Texas Rangers are gearing up to strengthen

their roster as they aim to defend their first-ever World Series title.

According to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, it’s anticipated that left-hander Jordan Montgomery and designated hitter J.D. Martinez, who are among the

top remaining free agents, will join the Rangers. Both players are represented by Scott Boras and are seeking teams as the opening day approaches.

While Rangers GM Chris Young has indicated that the team has completed its

player acquisitions, Heyman speculates that Texas might be open to offering Montgomery a contract similar to those

recently agreed upon by Cody Bellinger with the Chicago Cubs and Matt Chapman with the San Francisco Giants. These deals involve three-year terms

with opt-out clauses following the 2024 and 2025 seasons, after both Boras clients failed to secure anticipated nine-figure contracts.

As for the 36-year-old Martinez, he’s likely to accept a one-year deal.

Montgomery played a pivotal role in the Rangers’ journey to clinching the title last season following his acquisition

from the St. Louis Cardinals via trade. He posted a 4-2 record with a 2.79 ERA across 11 regular-season starts and

continued his strong performance in the postseason, recording a 3-1 record with a 2.90 ERA in five starts and one relief appearance.

With three members of their projected rotation set to begin the season on the injured list as they recover from surgery, the Rangers are in need of additional

starting pitching depth. Max Scherzer, dealing with a back injury, isn’t expected to return until June, while Jacob deGrom

and Tyler Mahle, who underwent elbow surgeries, are likely to be sidelined until after the All-Star break.

The initial rotation for the season is anticipated to be headed by Nathan

Eovaldi and Jon Gray, with Andrew Heaney, Cody Bradford, and Dane

Dunning rounding out the left-handed contingent. Of these, only Eovaldi had a postseason start last year, with the others primarily contributing in relief roles.

Heyman suggests that other potential suitors for Montgomery could include the Giants, Boston Red Sox, Cubs, New York Mets, and New York Yankees.

The Rangers have tentatively designated rookie Wyatt Langford as their main designated hitter, despite him being

selected fourth overall in the amateur draft from the University of Florida less than a year ago. However, with only 44

professional baseball games under his belt, the Rangers might opt to have him gain more experience at Triple-A Round Rock.

The Rangers could also open a spot for Martinez in the lineup by playing Langford in left field, moving rookie

Evan Carter from left field to center, and shifting Leodys Taveras into a reserve role.

Heyman lists the Los Angeles Angels, Mets and Giants as other potential destinations for Martinez.
