Will the Jets draft Rodgers’ successor in the first round?

The New York Jets are in need of a quarterback contingency plan for Aaron Rodgers. While they will explore options

in free agency, they should also consider acquiring a backup quarterback who could potentially become the future face of the franchise. With the 10th pick in the

NFL Draft and a draft class rich in quarterback talent, the Jets may find themselves drawn to a promising passer.

The NFL Scouting Combine showcased several second-tier quarterbacks aiming to impress NFL decision-makers, with top

prospects like Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, and Jayden Daniels sitting out. Bo Nix, Michael Penix Jr., and J.J. McCarthy

sought to elevate their draft stock, with McCarthy potentially emerging as the fourth quarterback taken in the first nine picks, a scenario that could benefit the

Jets. However, the likelihood of the Jets selecting a quarterback in the first round or early in the draft is slim for a significant reason. With Aaron Rodgers

slated to lead the team next season and likely beyond 2025, the Jets are focused on winning in the present. Investing their premier draft pick in a player who

wouldn’t contribute to Rodgers’ quest for a championship doesn’t align with their win-now approach. While sustainability

is important, the urgency to win is heightened when led by a future Hall of Fame quarterback nearing the end of his career.

New York is prioritizing offensive linemen and pass catchers in the upcoming draft, especially given their 10th overall pick. The quality of available

tackle and receiver prospects is more appealing than selecting a quarterback who has only recently garnered attention as a potential star. Additionally, the Jets

are unlikely to choose a quarterback in the first round due to the decision-making of general manager Douglas. Douglas, like any executive, aims to

secure his job, and selecting a quarterback who doesn’t lead to success in 2024 could jeopardize his tenure with the team. Front offices typically draft

quarterbacks to establish long-term stability, but given Douglas’ track record and the potential opportunity cost, it’s improbable that he’ll take this route.
