Just in:Sean McVay gives reasons why Rams trades Jalen Ramsey

Another sign that the Rams made the right decision in trading Jalen Ramsey.

When the Los Angeles Rams traded Jalen Ramsey to the Miami Dolphins, it was not

due to a bad situation, a bad fit, or the Rams’ 5-12 record. Ramsey wanted more guaranteed money. L.A. could have

found a way to make him happy, but only at the expense of other players and the overall health of the roster, and a year later, the cap situations of the Rams and

Dolphins make it clear that GM Les Snead made the right decision in sending Ramsey to Miami for a third-round pick and tight end Hunter Long

The 28-year-old Wilkins had a standout season in 2023, achieving a career-high

nine sacks and 23 quarterback hits while playing on the interior of the defensive line. Drafted 13th overall in 2019,

Wilkins is anticipated to command a contract worth approximately $23 million per season if he becomes a free

agent. The deadline to tag players is approaching, with Wilkins becoming free to sign with another team if left untagged by March 13th.

The acquisition of Ramsey by the Dolphins required guaranteeing his 2023

and 2024 salaries, along with an $11 million roster bonus. This totals $25.5 million guaranteed for the 30-year-old

cornerback in 2024, despite his recent serious knee injury. Ramsey returned to play in 10 games, securing three interceptions and earning a Pro Bowl

nod. However, he was the second-oldest player on Miami’s defense last season, following Xavien Howard, who was released due to cap constraints.

Currently, the Dolphins are projected to exceed the 2024 salary cap by $31.7

million, indicating substantial financial adjustments are needed to achieve compliance. Conversely, the Rams enter

free agency with over $40 million in cap space, having enjoyed a successful 2023 season comparable to the Dolphins’. Despite Miami’s higher win count, their

postseason performance fell short compared to the Rams’. Despite efforts to bolster their defense with acquisitions like Ramsey under coordinator Vic

Fangio, the Dolphins failed to meet expectations. Now, with Fangio gone and Howard released, Wilkins appears to be the next potential departure.

Are the Rams considering Christian Wilkins? Given the success of Kobie Turner alongside Aaron Donald, there

might not be an immediate fit for Wilkins in L.A. It seems clear who came out ahead in the trade.
